This camp in southern Malawi's Liwonde National Park has just four modern, eco-friendly tents that shelter beneath fever trees and baobabs on a large open plain that reaches towards the Shire (pronounced "Shiree") River. The tents are just perfect, with en-suite bathrooms and private decks that open to lush views. Liwonde is popular with birdwatchers, and its 380-odd species include Pel’s fishing-owl, Lilian's meadowlark, purple-crested turaco, Böhm’s bee-eater and colourful Nyasa lovebird. There's plenty for mammal lovers too – elephant, buffalo, black rhino, antelope (herds of waterbuck mill around the campsite), and recently reintroduced cheetah. It's 360-degree safari satisfaction!
This is a Robin Pope Safari Camp, with all the usual comforts you'd expect from tour operators of this calibre. Meals are served in the central area, then there's comfortable seating in which to lounge with the other guests and compare sightings. Of course, you may wish to retire to your private deck, with camera and binos in hand.
The four spacious tents (two twin, one king and one family tent) are set apart from each other, so each feels like a private oasis. The added creature comforts of an environmentally friendly cooling system keeps the mosquitoes at bay during the hot summer months. The inviting bathtub in the en-suite bathroom and the outdoor shower ensure that you maintain your cool. Relax on your private deck with a cold drink and enjoy those iconic Liwonde views.
Get close to nature on a guided walking safari, or take a day and/or night game drive for exciting views and excellent animal sightings. Admire the elephants – they're members of the largest remaining elephant population in the country. Game is easiest to spot during the dry season (April–October). When the rains arrive (November–March), the landscape is transformed into an emerald wonderland. Humidity is high, but this is the perfect time to explore the lagoons on a boat cruise.
Cruising down the Shire River and watching the game and the waterbirds is a photographic treat. Liwonde is unspoiled, so the animals are at their ease.
Take your sundowners on your private deck, and watch eagles soaring in the distance and waterbuck meandering nearby.
Depending on the season, either walking safaris or boat cruises tend to take centre stage. Be sure to ask if you'd prefer one or the other.
