The Lac Hotel is a small resort on the shores of Lake Sahambavy in Madagascar’s lush central region. Rustic, thatched bungalows are scattered along the water's edge - simple but comfortable - and the lakeshore setting is lovely. It overlooks the only tea plantation in Madagascar, and is on the railway line which links the north and south. Don’t let this put you off, as the trains go by very infrequently. However, it does have the advantage of providing an alternative means of reaching the hotel, as the roads in this part of the island are notoriously bumpy!
From $20 person/night
The lakeside setting is beautiful and really relaxing, with tropical gardens to explore.
The food! Delicious home-grown and locally produced organic fare is a feature on the Malagasy-inspired menu.
Visit the tea plantation next to the hotel – it’s the only one in Madagascar.
The main hotel area consists of a restaurant and bar on the upper level overlooking the lake, and a shady outdoor dining terrace. One of the highlights here is the delicious food; most of the fresh fruit and vegetables come from the Lac’s own bio-garden. There is also a comfortable lounge with satellite television, and WiFi for those who wish to stay in touch with friends and family. Tropical gardens fringe the hotel, alive with birds and butterflies.
The hotel has 30 thatched bungalows ranging in size from simple twins or doubles, larger family bungalows, and a delightful honeymoon suite with a little extra luxury. There are four fully equipped self-catering villas, and all options offer rustic yet comfortable accommodation and good basic amenities. Some are elevated on stilts over the water, while others nestle under the trees near the main hotel. The villas are a great option for families. All have en-suite bathrooms with hot running water.
The Lac has a friendly, no-frills feel. Though not on the usual tourist route, it’s a comfortable stopover between Madagascar’s contrasting north and south, and excellent value for money.
The lakeside setting invites you to sit back, relax, and soak up the tranquil, tropical feel. Visits to the neighbouring tea plantation can be arranged, and there are several national parks within easy reach. The nearest town, Fianarantsoa, is about half an hour's drive away; or if you're feeling adventurous, hop onto the train and enjoy the journey as it makes its way slowly through the scenic hills and farmlands, stopping at villages along the way.
