Le Domaine de Fontenay is a beautifully preserved colonial-style guest house in Madagascar’s northern region, close to the village of Joffreville. Dating back to 1904, the building has retained many of its original architectural features, and now offers elegant accommodation in eight delightful garden bungalows plus a spacious suite in the main house. Tropical gardens with hidden pathways lead into a private game reserve, home to some unique wildlife species and intriguing birds, with crystal-clear streams and tumbling waterfalls. The overall ambience is one of old-fashioned comfort, with an emphasis on the beauty of this stunning natural region.

The historic stylishness of the property, with its thick walls, big beams, fireplace created by the Eiffel Group, and elegant rooms evocative of colonial times.
Looking for lemurs in the private nature reserve that's open to lodge guests only. The walking trails wind through the forest and passing waterfalls. There's lots to see in the canopy and on the forest floor. Look closely for the world's smallest species of chameleon, and abundant birdlife.
Spending some time with Galileo, an endearing, banana-loving giant Aldabra tortoise that the owners (exceptionally welcoming and knowledgeable people) claim is 250 to 300 years old, and therefore the oldest living creature on Earth.
There's no doubting the colonial "Frenchness" of the main lodge, which faces lush tropical gardens dotted with seating areas shaded by large trees. Indoors is a large dining room and bar area with an open fireplace topped by a striking stone chimney. The furnishings are in keeping with the property, and are very comfortable. Quiet lounges and the lovely grounds make Le Domaine de Fontenay perfect for relaxing and soaking up the beautiful views.
Eight spacious luxury rooms set in the gardens have comfortable twin or double beds, swathes of mosquito net and a pleasingly simple level of colonial grandeur. The en-suite bathrooms are huge, and all the rooms have a private lounge. There's also a wonderful suite in the main house, with a sheltered outdoor terrace overlooking the grounds and gorgeous views over the rolling hills and forests all the way to the sparkling Bay of Diego in the distance.
We stayed in a spacious character-filled suite that once housed the mansion's horses. This tranquil, mosquito-free retreat is wonderful – we loved the architecture, the wildlife and the cool air at sunrise and sunset.
Madagascar is renowned for its unique wildlife, and activities at the lodge focus on exploring the surrounding reserve on foot, either on your own or with a guide, along marked trails. Night walks are particularly fascinating, with the opportunity to spot chameleons, geckos and a number of nocturnal mammals. Lemurs can be found, and the birdlife is phenomenal. Ambre National Park is a short distance away, and the fascinating coastal town of Antsiranana (Diego Suarez) is well worth a visit.
