Knysna is rather more than a beachside hamlet these days, with a steady influx of retirees and pleasure-seekers attracted by its lush surrounds and laid-back charm. Nevertheless, it still serves as an obligatory stop on the Garden Route, South Africa's favourite road trip. Leisure Island Lodge is located on a small island in the Knysna Lagoon on Bollard Bay, with front-row views of the Knysna Heads – the dramatic rocky doorway to the ocean. For five-star service and attention to detail, spectacular views and access to lovely beaches and indigenous forests, this is a trip worth making.
From $110 person/night
The views from the deck at sunset are to die for, especially with a glass of champers in hand.
Take your relaxation seriously and indulge in a full-body massage at the on-site spa.
Keep in mind that the standard rooms have a courtyard view while the suites face the lagoon - we know which one we'd opt for.
The immaculate white lounge has several cosy seating areas, a fireplace and large bay windows for plenty of natural light. Catch the breeze on the outdoor deck, with its views of the bay and the Heads, or sit poolside in the courtyards with a book, enjoying the garden and its attendant birdlife. In the evening, pull up to the bar with its ebony countertops, then head to Daniela's for a locally inspired gourmet menu and excellent South African wines.
Accommodation is in three double rooms and six suites, plus a family room (for 4) and a penthouse suite. The rooms (a separate single bed can be added) face the tranquil interior courtyard and pool. All have bathrooms with separate showers and bathtubs. Suites face the lagoon, with large glass sliding doors leading to private balconies. The penthouse suite offers private dining and lounge areas (with fireplace), a terrace and lagoon views. Furnishings throughout are chic, with all mod cons.
Knysna has something for everyone. For foodies, there are eateries aplenty, from restaurants and oyster bars to coffee shops and French bakeries. The Saturday Sedgefield Market (33 kilometres away) is a must. Enjoy the coastline from a cruiser or catamaran, or grab a towel and head to the beach or the hotel's pool deck. Love nature? Visit Steenbok Reserve on the island's northern edge to see salt marshes and indigenous flora. Or stroll through nearby Featherbed Private Nature Reserve.
