In terms of places to wine and dine, the Mandarin has a full house. Enjoy Thai food done every way at the relaxed Terrace Rim Naam - be sure to try Grandmother's coconut soup - or across the river at Sala Rim Naam, which serves gourmet menus accompanied by dazzling dance shows. There's everything from seafood to pop-up dining events and handmade pastries, not forgetting the inventive cocktails at The Bamboo Bar. Boat across the river for a divine treatment at the spa or take a dip in one of the swimming pools.
The rooms and suites are a polished blend of lavish lotus-print rugs, gold-framed images of Bangkok and king-size beds. Features vary between rooms but most have a cushy living area and some enjoy a private balcony. The bathrooms are clad in Italian marble with a deep tub or shower. As you rise in floor level, the suites get ever grander including 12-seater dining tables, walk-in closets and a private spa. The Oriental Suite is rather spectacular with a wrap-around terrace, entertainment room and kitchen.
Boat down the river to discover the history of Bangkok's Old Town, the once moated city. Visit the gleaming Grand Palace where Siam's royalty once lived, see the Reclining Buddha at Wat Pho and hear the stories of locals who would attempt daring feats on the Giant Swing. Take in a Calypso Cabaret Show at its waterfront theatre or get a taste of the city's street food as you stroll through its markets. You can even take a nocturnal jaunt to Chang Chui Bangkok market with the shell of an airplane as its centrepiece.
Lip-smacking food, craft beer and a great dollop of life in the streets of the city that never rests.
