Owned and run by Deb Tittle, one of the South Luangwa’s most extraordinary and legendary guides, Mapazi Camp is a fabulously Zambian and truly authentic new walking camp. Located right in the north of the national park, Mapazi is surrounded by landscape that's ideal for exploring on two feet – almost no roads spoil the pristine terrain. In fact, the region is virtually unexplored, and there’s a variety of beautiful game to wave your binos at. And if that weren’t enough, all walking safaris will be guided by Deb herself, which in our opinion is the only reason you’ll need to book.
From $650 person/night
At the end of the day, gather around the camp fire for home-cooked food and stories that will warm your heart.
This is safari the way it should be, with no bells and whistles but all the comforts you might need (including a cold G&T!).
From dung beetles and buffalo to toothbrush plants and sausage trees, you’ll learn more about the bush with Deb than you ever thought possible.
This isn’t the sort of place for silver service and hot tubs – and that’s just why we love it. Deb has created an authentic tented hideaway in the heart of the bush. Shaded by mature trees on the Luangwa River's banks, the central tent is cool and shady, dotted about with plenty of comfy chairs. Most importantly, there’s a fridge to keep the drinks cold in the evening and a fire to keep the coffee warm in the morning.
There are only three walk-in tents at Mapazi, so the atmosphere in camp is intimate and every staff member will know your name before you’ve even arrived! Inside the canvas, you’ll find solid beds (twins and doubles) with lovely soft bedding, and en-suite bathrooms with hot showers and flushing loos. Each also has a shaded "porch" complete with safari chairs that are the perfect spot for some siesta birdwatching.
When we talk about getting away from it all, this is what we mean… No cellphones – nothing but mesmerising scenery and incredible walking safaris.
The camp is focused completely on exploring the bush on foot, and all safaris are guided by Debs. If you’ve never tried a walking safari, we couldn’t think of a better place for your first one; if you have, you won’t have experienced one like this! The area around camp is virtually free from vehicles and you’ll wind your way through beautiful groves of trees, across open plains and through glittering streams in search of game both big and small.
Show all wildlife
South Luangwa National Park has the deserved reputation as one of Africa's best game viewing destinations. A diverse mix of habitats and oxbow lagoons attract a variety of wildlife species. Encounter vast herds of elephant, buffalo, hippo, zebra and an assortment of antelope. However, it is the predators of South Luangwa that produce the most excitement with lion and leopard in abundance and wild dog present in the area.
