Surrounded by luxuriant tropical forest on the north-west coast of Nosy Boraha (previously Île Sainte-Marie), Masoandro Lodge is a pretty and private retreat about 25 minutes by tuk-tuk from the nearest village. The sense of peace is palpable here, far off the beaten track, and the hillside wooden bungalows with great long-range views offer all the comforts you need. Snorkel the coral reefs, get as close to the whales as you're allowed, loll in the pool and enjoy well-prepared dishes and courteous service.
From $40 person/night
Snorkelling the reef to see the lovely corals and hosts of bright and nosy reef fish.
Taking a day trip to nearby Île Aux Nattes, a tiny picture-postcard island, with no roads and some truly beautiful beaches and private coves, and a reef-fringed lagoon.
The breathtaking views of the sea. The rim-flow pool offers an uninterrupted view of the oh-so-blue waters of the Sainte-Marie channel and across to the Madagascar mainland, with the opportunity to watch whales (July to September). You couldn't get further from the rat race if you tried.
Everything is geared towards your appreciation of the sea at Masoandro, so the squashy sofas in the main areas, the seating on the veranda and the dining area face the ocean. The cuisine is simple, but the meals are super-fresh and delicious. In-season visitors can expect nightly entertainment, always good for holiday fun. The staff are friendly and speak English. Excursions are arranged at reception, but check before booking as some outings can be expensive. Wi-fi is available.
Stay in one of 12 Nature Bungalows or six Deluxe Bungalows. The smaller options are charming, with their woodland setting and ocean views. Each has aircon, a private balcony, mosquito-netted beds and an en-suite bathroom with hot water, a shower and toilet. The larger, more expensive Deluxe Bungalows can sleep four people (in a bedroom and adaptable living room). They're very comfortable, with that vital aircon, minibar, TV and en-suite bathroom.
It's wonderful opening the door in the morning to look out over this bit of paradise, with its palm trees, amazing blue ocean and infinity pool. The prices are reasonable too. The luxury bungalows are amazing if you really desire your own private space, but the smaller ones on the beach are ideal in terms of location.
