Rising from the ashes of the recently fire-damaged Kyambura Game Lodge is the renamed Mazike (Luganda for "chimp") Valley Lodge. It's a new addition to Uganda’s luxury camp portfolio, and we are great fans of its location – a chimp-rich valley in the gorgeous Kyambura Game Reserve, 30 minutes from the main northern gate to the Queen Elizabeth National Park. The lodge has just eight lovely bandas, constructed from sustainably sourced materials to blend into the wilderness. And what a magical wilderness it is – picture dramatic mountains, crater lakes, pockets of dense rainforest, savannas, wild rivers and incredible wildlife.
From $240 person/night
Chimpanzee trekking is the main safari activity in Kyambura Gorge. Most of the chimps here are habituated (they're used to humans in their environment). Seeing them interacting with each other and going about their daily activities is an experience of a lifetime.
Calling all birders! East of Kyambura Gorge are numerous beautiful crater lakes where you'll find a huge number of waterbirds, including greater and lesser flamingo and great egret. More than 330 bird species have been recorded throughout Kyambura Reserve.
This oasis, in its lush 50-shades-of-green scenery, couldn't be further from city bustle if it tried. The location is a feast for the eye and a natural tranquilliser.
A soaring thatched roof shelters the open-plan lounge, dining area and bar, with views of the landscape reaching to the dramatic Rwenzori Mountains in the distance. The small, sheltered swimming pool in the gardens is perfect for a post-trek plunge. The meals are good, wholesome fare made using produce from the lodge’s garden, and you really shouldn't pass up the chance to enjoy Uganda’s locally grown coffee. in the evenings, tap your toes in time with the flamboyant traditional dancers.
Eight self-contained bandas are set in the gardens, each completely unique in shape, size, style and furnishings. All are spacious and comfortable, with double or twin beds, en-suite bathrooms, hot and cold running water, electricity, wi-fi and, of course, lovely views.
A wonderfully rustic lodge offering low-key luxury in a magnificent location. The wildlife viewing is great, as is the chance to experience life, Ugandan style.
Chimpanzee trekking is the main activity in Kyambura Gorge, with tours taking 1–3 hours. Take a guided game drive or a boat trip along the Kazinga Channel to see lion, elephant and buffalo, large populations of crocodile and hippo, and unusual antelope species such as Ugandan kob. Birdwatching is out of this world, and this is one of the best spots to view the bizarre African shoebill. Explore the rainforests and the spectacular crater lakes, or visit a local community.
