About Meno a Kwena

Amongst the glitzy 5 star offerings Botswana is famous for, Meno a Kwena has barefoot bohemian luxe down to a T. With eight vintage-style tents perched thrillingly on the edge of a rocky clifftop, the views of the Boteti River and accompanying menagerie of animals are can’t-take-your-eyes-off-it gorgeous. Further afield, the activities are brilliant and very varied with game drives, scenic flights and quad biking on offer in three pristine wildlife sanctuaries. And all this is combined with Meno’s inherent passion for the bush, wildlife and community development, which just makes us love it even more.

What you'll love

Watching the largest migration of zebra and wildebeest in southern Africa (in season) as they come to drink from the river right under your nose.

Insiders tip

Meno is a great camp to visit in Botswana’s ‘green season’ when the river is full enough to enjoy a leisurely boat cruise amid the menagerie of animals.

Something to think about

Trips to the Makgadikgadi Pans will take the best part of a day and involve lots of driving – rather enjoy the excellent activities on offer just outside camp. They are just as excellent!

The property

Meno is a camp of comfort, authentic character and seriously good service and boy do they do them all well. The canvas lounge and dining tents are full of quirky artefacts and there’s always someone on hand to pour you a drink. For wildlife watching, there are plenty of comfy chairs, a Flintstone-style rock swimming pool and a floating hide. It’s also one of the lowest impact camps in Bots, powered entirely by solar with bread cooked in tin boxes over the fire.

The rooms

Eight charming Meru-style tents are hidden away in the bushes above the river to allow view-gazing in total privacy and although rustic, have everything you might need (and a few eccentric touches!). The tents themselves are quite small but the large outside verandas almost double the space - who wants to be inside with that view anyway? Bathrooms are en-suite with flushing loos and copper-bucket showers with hot water on request.

Bush Walks

Game drives vary from short sorties in the local area to full day trips in the Makgadikgadi (accessed via a boat across the river), Nxai Pans and the Central Kalahari. You certainly aren’t restricted to being in a vehicle from dawn till dusk however and there are scenic flights, walks with local San people, sleepouts, quad biking and stargazing all on offer. It does pay to make a plan to squeeze in everything you would like to so do chat to us before you depart.

Positive impact

Meno a Kwena is owned by Natural Selection which is dedicated to conservation, partnering with local communities, governments, and organizations to protect and expand conservation areas. They build eco-friendly camps that blend into the environment and aim to inform guests about Africa's wildlife challenges and successes, hoping to inspire further positive action for wildlife conservation.

A contribution of $50 per guest, which is included in the nightly rate, goes towards the above goals.

This harsh desert environment is transformed during the wet season, attracting wildlife from far and wide. Africa's second largest migration of wildebeest and zebra can be seen here, followed by the infamous Kalahari Black-maned lions and stalking cheetah. An added bonus is the impressive list of unique birds, and a sea of pink flamingos, feeding on the algae-rich waters of the pan.
