This gem of a spot is simply appointed with comfortable cottages and rooms, beautifully kept gardens with sprawling lawns, its own vegetable garden, and a large swimming pool. Karatu & Surrounds, Ngorongoro Crater, Tanzania
Unlike some lodges that tell you that they are 'minutes from the Ngorongoro Crater entrance gate' - this one really is! Big Five action awaits...
Ngorongoro Farm House is one of the larger lodges in the area but the individual rooms are all hidden away and the expansive farm setting offers privacy, giving you the best of both worlds at a very good price.
Some of the rooms are quite far from the main dining room and the distance can feel longer in the dark - solve the problem by simply requesting one of the closer ones.
The main communal area possesses a big barn-like feel with its high thatched roof and wrought iron chandeliers. The decor is in keeping with the farm feel - tiled floors, old wooden furniture, comfortable couches and a cosy red brick fire place. Most of the area is taken up with privately set dining tables. Outside is a swimming pool with recliners, and a substantial wooden deck with an open fire pit that roars with warmth at night.
There are 52 en-suite garden cottages spread across the estate, with stunning views of the distant volcano and verandas that open onto the gorgeous gardens. Each room is large with comfortable chairs, a coffee table, four-poster bed and a mosquito net for uninterrupted dreams. Although the rooms have everything they need, they do have a slightly hollow feeling which is probably attributable to their size.
The main drawcard is mind blowing game drives offering wildlife encounters in “Africa’s Eden”, the Ngorongoro Crater. Guided walks in Ngorongoro Conservation area are an opportunity to take in the small details of this pristine paradise. There’s also the chance for a guided farm tour. A Maasai Cultural Walk will introduce you to the local customs, traditional plant uses, and ancient stories. If you’re in the mood for a bit of pampering, indulge in a therapeutic massage in the comfort of your own room.
The organisation supports various community projects, including the de-snaring project in the Serengeti, medical care solutions like the Olmoti Clinic in Western Kilimanjaro, and educational opportunities like the Emusoi Centre in Arusha. Additionally, initiatives like the Children’s Health Program in Nairobi and contributions to Wildlife Management Areas and Tanzania National Parks underscore their commitment to community well-being and environmental conservation.
Great food, lovely property. Pool seemed like needed some updates. Staff was great and service was excellent.
Charming facility, secluded yet accessible individual cottages. Staff is highly attentive...when we decided to skip dinner one night our waitress came down to check on us.
