Palmiet Valley Estate is a historic wine farm on the outskirts of Paarl, the hub of the Cape Winelands. With a history dating back to 1694, this magnificent Cape Dutch manor house has an indulgent sense of bygone luxury, and is furnished with a wonderful collection of antiques gathered by the owners over the years. The estate is beautiful, with centuries-old oak trees, fruit orchards, sweeping tracts of vines, and manicured lavender-edged lawns. Accommodation ranges from standard rooms to larger luxury suites and a vast Presidential Suite. There are also two self-contained cottages, so there’s something to suit everyone’s requirements.

The property

Anticipate Dutch elegance at its finest, with original polished timber floors, ornate ceilings, vintage Persian rugs and an eclectic selection of antiques. Elegant meals are served in the dining room set with fine china, antique silver and crystal glasses, or out on the terrace in fine weather. Upstairs, the loft lounge has deep leather couches and an open fireplace for chilly winter spells. Spa treatments are offered on the rooftop deck under a Bedouin-style tent overlooking the swimming pool.

Palmiet Valley Estate offers a choice of top-end accommodation in 13 suites, from spacious country-style rooms, larger suites, and a vast Presidential Suite to two quaint Victorian cottages in the grounds. Each is unique, with furniture to please antique lovers, crisp linens and original artwork reflecting some of the region’s history. Huge en-suite bathrooms range in style from Victorian vintage chic to Turkish opulence. All have private patios and essentials such as air conditioning, electric blankets and CD players.

Activities

The large grounds are perfect for strolling and enjoying a spot of birdwatching, or relaxing next to the swimming pool. Explore the acres of vineyards, or head out into the winelands for a tasting session or two. Sporty types can play a round of golf on one of the excellent courses nearby, and there's a huge choice of outdoor adventure activities in the surrounding mountains and valleys. The stunning Cape coastline presents plenty of options for longer day trips.
