The owners of popular Bayete Guest Lodge, set in a quiet neighbourhood outside the town of Victoria Falls, have opened a sister lodge called PheZulu. It's a vibrant retreat with a tranquil atmosphere and, like Bayete, lies just three kilometres from the falls and all the action they bring. The best way to take on this imposing icon is to strike at it from many sides, experiencing everything from rapturous (and damp!) views to adrenalin-pulsing pursuits in the gorge. You must visit Vic Falls at least once in your life and PheZulu is the perfect base to catch your breath again.
From $110 person/night
Nothing is too much for the jovial and very helpful team - they'll even prepare a few snacks if you're peckish after an adventurous day out.
Some argue that the best view of the Falls is from above and we tend to agree. There's really no exaggerating the thrill of a heli flight above the 'smoke that thunders' - book if you can!
PheZulu is only 3 kilometres away from the famous Falls but if you're heading into town or checking out other activities, you'll have to catch a taxi.
With mature trees and fragrant blossoms, the gardens give PheZulu a tropical feel, although they're kept trimmed to fit in to their suburban surrounds. There's a swimming pool that's deliciously cool – just the right temp for a dip year-round, a bar and a restaurant that offers plenty of separate seating in its brightly decorated dining room. Breakfasts are included (from fruits to full English); while dinner comes at an extra cost. Meals are also served on the shady veranda in the garden.
This medium-sized lodge is niftily designed to make each area feel spacious. Nineteen rooms sleep two in a king-sized or twin-bed configuration, each with an en-suite bathroom with both bath and shower; two additional rooms sleep three guests and offer just a shower in the en-suite bathroom. All have mod cons including wi-fi, aircon and hairdryers. Garden-facing rooms have double doors that open to a small furnished patio. The interiors are bright and crisp, and the thoughtful design makes them very comfortable.
Victoria Falls, one of the seven natural wonders of the world, is a 1.7 kilometre-wide gorge through which the Zambezi River plunges 111 dramatic metres before resuming its path eastwards to the Indian Ocean. In full flood, the falls are overwhelming. Most activities take place downstream – white-water rafting, bungee and gorge swinging, helicopter rides and more. Take a tranquil sunset cruise well above the falls, or a spine-tingling dip in the Devil's Pool on the lip of the falls.
