Trekking for lemurs through Madagascar's rainforests is not for the faint of heart, so a short break to recover your breath on a tropical island before heading home is an excellent idea. And four-star Princesse Bora Lodge on the Island of Nosy Boraha is the perfect place to unwind. Previously called Île Sainte-Marie, the island's tourism development is low-key, so it's retained a wonderfully unspoilt atmosphere. The lodge is tranquil and within striking distance of Sainte-Marie beach, the accommodation is stylish and comfortable (down to the hammock on your veranda), and the food is simple and delicious.
From $280 person/night
Arriving from the airport in unusual style – in an oxcart.
Watching humpback whales and their calves. These marine giants migrate to the Sainte-Marie lagoon between mid-June and September to give birth. Trips to see them can be arranged (strict rules ensure that the trips adhere to international marine mammal protection legislation). Seeing their sheer bulk and watching their huge tails break the surface with a thundering splash is unforgettable.
Boarding a pirogue to pretty Île aux Nattes, a small island with great swimming and usually empty beaches.
Although billed as a family hotel, Princesse Bora is popular with couples who wish to spend some intimate time together. There's a lovely lounge with deep seating, a well-stocked bar and a games room. Drink cocktails on the pier that stretches into the ocean, and dine well in the restaurant. There's a lap pool with loungers overlooking the ocean and a glorious spa. Wi-fi in the public areas.
Twenty villas are scattered throughout the lodge's tropical gardens, which line the beach. The Comfort Villas are simple with hanging beds and fans to cool you; the Luxury Villas are bigger with lovely wooden furniture and flooring, aircon and a mezzanine floor; and the six new Executive Beach Villas are glass-fronted and huge, with views of the lagoon from the bed or sunken bath or from the extensive terrace area.
This is a romantic place, perfect for honeymooners and couples longing for some peace in the sun.
