Award-winning Earth Lodge has been sculpted into a slope of earth, making this sanctuary almost invisible in its wild setting – the Sabi Sabi, a private reserve within the 65,000-hectare Sabi Sand Game Reserve in south-western Kruger. Indoors, Earth Lodge is a super-luxurious and unique place, designed with such consideration for the landscape that it's been described as the most environmentally sensitive lodge in Africa. No fences separate it from its wildlife-paradise surroundings, so the animals roam freely. And there's a treasury of animals to see, from the bucket-list Big Five to cheetah, wild dog and 200-plus other indigenous species.

The entrance to the main lodge is through a hidden tunnel and as you emerge at the other end, the most breathtaking panorama of the African bush unfolds before you. What a welcome!
Try the wine cellar dinner; you'll be surrounded by over 6000 bottles of South Africa's best wines and if you're on the all inclusive rate, go wild with your choices!
If you're looking for classic safari style, this might not be the camp for you. It's ultra-modern and completely unique (yet totally environmentally-friendly) and not what you might expect from a lodge.
The free-flowing main area houses a tranquil sitting room with a fireplace and a small library for browsing. The indoor/outdoor dining area (expect fine and varied cuisine) overlooks a waterhole and the bushveld. There's an art gallery, a meditation garden and a well-stocked underground wine cellar in which you can also dine. The furnishings throughout are both comfortable and quirky. Outside is a boma with firepits, a gym (with huge views) and a five-star pampering spa.
There are 13 ultra-luxurious suites, including the Amber Presidential Suite (with its own study, steam room, kitchen and dining area). The furniture in each has been innovatively designed (the headboard of Amber Suite's bed is carved from an entire tree). Each suite has an en-suite glass-fronted bathroom, an indoor and outdoor shower and a private plunge pool. Wooden sculptures by South African artist Geoffrey Armstrong are dotted around the space.

Morning and evening game drives (and more if something exciting has been reported). Guided foot safaris are both invigorating and exciting, and introduce you to the smaller creatures and the interesting bushveld vegetation. Take a birdwatching safari to see some of the 350 species of birds. Tread the mill at the gym, head to the spa for a soothing treatment, or simply wallow in your private pool.
