About Sanctuary Olonana Camp

Sanctuary Olonana is an elegant tented camp in the heart of Kenya’s finest safari region. It's situated within a private concession alongside the Masai Mara Game Reserve, overlooking a stretch of the Mara River with a resident pod of hippos. A mix of classic safari elements – canvas tents, timber and thatch – together with a strong Maasai influence gives this camp an authentic African feel, with luxury all round. Game viewing is excellent, and one of the highlights is the chance to spend a day at a Maasai village, and participate in some of the daily rituals and routines.

Highlights

Vast tents overlook the Mara River, with its resident pod of hippos. Game viewing starts in camp, and guided drives further afield offer excellent photographic opportunities of predators, plains game of all sizes, and stunning landscapes.

The camp is in a prime position for exploring Kenya’s famous Masai Mara Game Reserve, and during the annual wildebeest season, the great migration passes by, literally on your doorstep.

Spend a day with the Maasai people and take part in traditional village life, visit a local school, and learn about this region’s rich cultural heritage.

The property

The guest area stretches along the riverbank on a raised, partially thatched timber deck where meals are served. Inside is a spacious lounge and library with a vast stone fireplace, a small curio shop, and a mini-spa. Interiors have been partly designed by the local Maasai women, using a traditional technique to “mud” the walls – an authentic African touch which mixes well with the earthy tones and fresh, contemporary furnishings. There’s a lovely swimming pool in the tropical gardens.

The rooms

14 spacious canvas tents are set a good distance apart, with wraparound timber walkways and viewing deck that look across the Mara River. Each tent has two double beds under full-length mosquito nets –perfect if you’re travelling with children. The beautiful interiors have earthy colours, soft lighting, roll-up window panels, and deep, comfortable armchairs. A canvas screen separates the en-suite bathroom from the living area, and the two larger honeymoon tents have outdoor showers as well.

The Masai Mara is Kenya's flagship conservation region: a place of rolling plains, bush scrub and acacia thicket— known for the seasonal great wildebeest migration, a mass movement of more than two million, wildebeest, zebra, kongoni, topi and gazelle. As exciting as this phenomenon is, there is so much more to this wilderness. Encounter elephants, buffalo, hippo, giraffe, crocodiles and a variety of cats including lion, cheetah, leopard and the shy serval during a stay in these parts.
