Situated just 12 kilometres upstream from those famous Victoria Falls, Sussi & Chuma Lodge holds prime position on the banks of the wide Zambezi in Mosi-oa-Tunya ('the smoke that thunders') National Park. Named for the servants who buried David Livingstone’s heart in Africa, Sussi & Chuma is far different from the usual accommodation found in the reserve. This is not for those who like to rough it, but an ultra version of a classic safari-style camp. It is perfectly positioned for access to the falls, while being itself a peaceful retreat surrounded by jackalberry trees and palms, animals and birds.

The take-your-breath-away lunch and dinner locations: in privacy on your deck, on an island, or at the riverside pool, serenaded by gruff hippos.
It's easy to become cocooned in luxury here. Get back to grassroots and take a bicycle ride to Nakatindi Village near Livingstone, and speak to the community with whom Sussi & Chuma has been working on various projects since 2010.
Some elements of the lodge, the dining room, in particular, feel very styled and perhaps a tad over the top.
The main area is large, and split into two levels. Upstairs is a bar and lounge with an elegantly weathered wooden floor. Downstairs, the double-storey dining room has gorgeous river views. Outside, an outdoor patio dining area is perfect for dining with occasional four-legged companions, and there's a viewing deck flanked by large fireplaces on the riverbank. You can indulge yourself at the spa, or relax beside the real highlight – the riverside swimming pool with its comfy sun loungers.
Raised walkways lead to 12 fabulous chalets tucked between the riverine trees. All have extremely comfortable king-sized or twin beds, safari-chic furniture, aircon, coffee-making facilities, a minibar and a private balcony. The en-suite bathrooms have baths and showers, twin basins, toiletries and hair dryers. Two private Chuma Houses are perfect for families or those a heightened sense of exclusivity. Each house has two en-suite bedrooms, a spacious lounge and dining area, a plunge pool – and a personal chef.
