Not all safari camps are of the canvas and game driving variety and Sasaab is definitely one of them. Well, there’s a little bit of canvas around and you can certainly game drive in the striking wild lands of the Samburu and Buffalo Springs reserves, but that’s just the beginning; there’s also camel rides, spa treatments, fly camping and walking safaris at this elegant Moroccan-inspired retreat. As the only tourist initiative in the area, ties with the local Samburu are strong and $50 from each stay is donated to the 600 families in the Westgate Community Conservancy. Beautifully designed, ethical and eco-friendly… could this be the perfect safari camp?
From $NaN person/night
Attention to detail here is second to none and literally everything has been thought of from binos on the game drives to cool boxes in the bedrooms and even watercolour paints and brushes if you’re feeling inspired.
Fly camping is a not-to-be-missed opportunity and can even be done for more than one night (if you can tear yourself away from the lodge).
When visiting a Samburu village, be sure to dress fairly modestly and ask permission before taking photos of anyone.
The cool white-washed floors and breezy Arabic arches of the elegant main reception, lounge and dining area are instantly appealing after a dusty drive – so much so that it would be easy to sink into one of the plump cushions and gaze at the stunning landscapes all day long. But equally tempting is the glittering plunge pool, perched on the hillside with the same spectacular views, and dinner, a feast of exotic Moroccan and Swahili inspired fare, served by flickering lantern-light.
The nine Bedouin boudoirs are crafted from thatch, stone and canvas and spaced along the Ewaso Nyiro River, giving each plenty of privacy and a view as jaw-dropping as the next. Taking centre stage are the Zanzibari four-posters, draped in creamy linens and enshrouded in gauzy mosquito nets whilst skilfully-crafted Moroccan trappings add a sultry air. All are over 100 square metres and bathrooms are just as big and beautiful. For view gazing, there’s a large stone veranda with plunge pool and loungers and inside, a sunken chill-out area.
As the only lodge for miles around, activities at Sasaab are unique and private. Explore the exquisite Samburu Reserve on four wheels, two legs (your own) or four legs on a camel. Visits to the local Samburu community are wonderful and varied; stop off at the market, visit the school, play football with the kids or even have dinner.
This was an oasis in the middle of no where. The tent (if you can call it that) was incredible, extremely large and came with its own plunge pool. The staff was great and the food was also great! Loved the visits from the resident *** ***'s.
Show all wildlife
Encounter a diversity of species in the arid and beautiful Samburu National Reserve, including herds of elephant and buffalo, prides of lions and both cheetah and leopard. However, what separates the Samburu from other parks is its unique wildlife, including the gerenuk, Grevy's zebra, Beisa oryx, reticulated giraffe and blue legged Somali ostrich. A noteworthy mention is the reintroduction of the last member of the Big 5: black rhinoceros, currently scarce but making good progress.
