About Sausage Tree Safari Camp

This intimate family-run camp in Balule Nature Reserve, part of South Africa's Greater Kruger National Park, is a classic from top to bottom. From the professional guiding and hearty meals to the charming canvas safari tents, Sausage Tree offers no frills, just authentic hospitality focused on your experience of the bush. The camp lies in a woodland of mixed acacia, leadwood and sausage trees overlooking a dry riverbed and, in the distance, the northern Drakensberg mountains. This vast area teems with game – apart from the Big Five, there are 90 species of mammals, 280 bird species and 72 reptiles.

What you'll love

Almost everyone that visits Sausage Tree comments on the staff – dedicated, experienced and passionate, their attention to detail will be the cherry on top of your stay.

Insiders tip

If you can book in for a microlight flight. They might only be 20 minutes but the views of the reserve spread out below you in a glorious carpet of flora and fauna are fabulous.

Something to think about

Sausage Tree is a simple camp so don’t expect frills and fancies – but the spa does make a lovely added extra.

The property

At the heart of camp is a large wooden deck with views across the trees of the riverbed and the distant mountains. A thatched lounge incorporates a comfortable seating area with beautiful bush-inspired fabrics and lots of hardwood furnishings. Outside on the deck, another thatch-shaded seating area overlooks a small pool with deck chairs, and the fire pit. Most meals are served at a long table on a separate shaded deck, where the atmosphere is convivial.

The rooms

Sausage Tree has just five elevated canvas tents, each sleeping two. The rooms are simple, with mesh windows and zipped, foldaway doors that open to lovely verandas looking into the woodland. With plush beds in double or twin-bed configurations, crisp cotton linens and a few splashes of colour, the tents are super safari-style comfortable. Each has an en-suite bathroom with flush toilet, indoor shower and bathtub, and an alfresco shower. Summers are hot, so aircon and a fan are provided.

Bush Walks

Twice-daily game drives offer the best viewings, but don't miss the few guided bush walks. The guides are extremely conscious of your particular needs, so don't be shy to reveal your list of "must-sees". There's a lot of ground to cover in Balule, but if you're keen to venture further afield, Sausage Tree offers several day trips, including a half-day houseboat excursion on the Olifants River, a scenic drive through the Blyde River Canyon and trips to wildlife rehabilitation centres.
