As if someone had dropped a Parisian mansion into an oft-walked street in Hanoi, the Metropole is a delightful blend of hidden history and lavish design. Grab cocktails named after famous guests above an old bomb shelter and satisfy your sweet tooth at the chocolate library where the first movie in South East Asia was played. With Franco-inspired elegance, the hotel is a scenic stroll from the sights of the French Quarter but a night at the opera can easily be swapped for a wander through the ancient citadel. After discovering Hanoi's cacophony of old and new, return by limo for a well-deserved massage!
From $230 person/night
Learning the stellar backstory of the Metropole! At over 100 years old, it's welcomed everyone from Charlie Chaplin to Joan Baez and you'll transported back through time as jazz fills the air on a Saturday night.
Suites are divided between the original Metropole and the newer Opera wing; the former have a classic charm and the latter are more contemporary in a quieter spot.
Although it makes a lovely venue for a cocktail, the pool is on the small side for a hotel this size.
The hotel has a throng of French-flavoured restaurants with a mix of Vietnamese fusion cuisine beginning at Le Beaulieu, a classic spot with velvet table runners, marble flooring and top-class seafood. In an alfresco brasserie setting, La Terrasse is the place for people watching over tea and Le Club Bar is a glossy space with tasty afternoon teas and jazz evenings. For a drop more of Vietnam, Spices Garden serves traditional dishes with garden-fresh ingredients. Grab unique 'personality' cocktails like the tangy Socialite at the artsy angelina bar or enjoy your drinks by the pool. Take a break from the city with soothing moments at the spa.
With a whopping 364 rooms and suites, accommodation at The Metropole is a silky combination of polished hardwood floors, tailored carpets and tall windows. In the Metropole Wing, the style is inspired by 1920s France and Asia and the suites are particularly grand with rich furnishings, metallic drapes and names garnered from its famous guests. The Opera Wing is more mod with a range of open-plan rooms and Neo-Classical suites with a spa room and spacious lounge. The en-suite bathrooms are decked out in honey-coloured marble with a wall of mirrors, clawfoot tubs and Hermes toiletries.
Its winning location in the French Quarter means there's more than enough culture to enjoy and the pedestrian-friendly area is a menagerie of museums, high-end boutiques and art galleries. You can even catch a show at the Water Puppet Theatre! Hoan Kiem Lake is the gem of Hanoi where the Rising Sun Bridge makes for beautiful pictures and you might even spot endangered turtles sailing through the water. On Sunday evenings, locals and tourists gather to play games, dance and relax. Head to the Old Quarter to see the incredible Imperial Citadel, visit Confucius' Temple of Literature and all the street food you can manage.
