Located on the very edge of the glorious Ranthambore National Park, India’s prime real estate for spotting a flash of Royal Bengal, Sujan Sher Bagh is intimate, beautiful and genuinely couldn’t be any closer to the action. It’s so close, in fact, that one female tiger in particular has been known to wander the pathways! Run by Jaisal and Anjali Singh, the camp harks back to the days of the British Raj and bygone safaris, and there’s a certain old-world glamour to the 12 hand-stitched canvas tents; think smouldering paraffin lanterns, gleaming campaign furniture and plenty of elegant copper fittings. By day, head into the park for wildlife-filled game drives (with hopefully a tiger amongst the varied cast) and by night, enjoy aperitifs at dusk before dinner fit for a Maharajah…

Being so close to the wildlife. There’s a waterhole just beyond the clipped lawn and there’s nothing better than picking a chair and settling down for an afternoon with a pair of binocs.
It might not be why you came, but the horse safaris through the surrounding countryside are fabulous – and a great way to spot smaller birds and butterflies, and catch of a glimpse of local life.
Although incredibly close to the national park, the camp is a little off the main drag – but the extra time in the car to get there is worth it.
A classic tented camp, Sher Bagh has a main dining area and a canvas-roofed bar for on-tap G&Ts and Bloody Marys. Guests gather at the campfire for evening drinks, jungle gossip, and alfresco thali dinners; the chefs will often make an appearance to cook on the traditional clay oven too. Food is sublime (both Indian and continental options are available) and many of the ingredients come from the pretty organic gardens and the nearby Sher Bagh farm. There’s also a lovely spa under the shade of a fig tree for reviving tired tootsies and a swimming pool for mid-afternoon swims.
The 10 luxury tents are spacious and gorgeous, each a white-canvas cocoon from the wilds outside. Plush carpets, soft linens and dark-wood chairs and tables are stylish and charming; there’s 24-hour electricity and air-conditioning, and all have en-suite bathrooms. For something extra special, the two suites are truly romantic. Pukka Sahib come complete with a netted veranda, a private jacuzzi and alfresco shower, whilst Burra Sahib has its own pool and a private butler. Sigh...
Tigers, tigers and more tigers. Activities are geared around looking for the elusive cats and twice daily game drives are always available and with all the trimmings (picnics, binocs and blankets depending on the time of day and even camera equipment if required). Ranthambore is also home to over 350 species of bird, plus, keep eyes peeled for deer, peacocks, eagles and monkeys. A jaunt to the hilltop Ranthambore Fort will reveal spectacular views of your surroundings, and if you’ve got any time to spare, join an informal cooking class with the chefs – always fun!
