A secluded enclave in northern Lombok, delightful Lombok Lodge offers an expertly-curated experience of Indonesia. Every day has something special in store, whether it's waking at dawn to admire Mount Rinjani as the sun rises or puttering across the ocean to spend the day snorkelling around the Gili Islands. Back at the lodge, nothing is too much trouble for the attentive team and you'll find cooling flannels to welcome you back after a trek and handmade sorbets served by the 25-metre infinity pool. The cherry on top is the interiors that are beautifully-styled in soothing tones of cream, white and grey, teak sculptures and driftwood furnishings.
From $670 person/night
The level of service is hard to beat, as are the striking views. It's hard to choose what we love more.
If you're travelling with family, there are some fantastic activities for older kids including rock pool explorations, mountain biking and the enticing 'breakfast with the dolphins'.
The beach is rocky so it's not the best for a swim, but the lodge has a private beach at Gili Meno complete with shaded loungers.
Breakfast and lunch can be enjoyed anywhere you like, and you can take your pick from the 'healthy' menu or more decadent dishes like crunchy croque monsieur or grilled barramundi. Dinners are served on the lantern-lit garden terrace (and include favourites like soy and ginger pork ribs) and are often shared in a convivial setting with the executive chef and manager. When you're in need of some pampering, head to the Frangipani Spa for a charcoal facial or spoiling Balinese massage.
Each with its own distinctive Italian cool, the lodges and suites all have outdoor sitting areas to showcase the splendid ocean views. Large beds are draped in muslin curtains, and chic, oversized furniture fills the space. In-room gadgets include a Nespresso machine, Apple TV and iPad, which you can use to order something to nibble on or book a spa treatment without leaving your bed. The bathrooms are gorgeous and spa-like with a deep tub and outdoor rain shower.
The Lombok Lodge is just a 15-minute boat ride away from the ravishing Gili Islands for some of the best snorkelling and swimming in the world. On the other end of the spectrum, make the intrepid trek to Mount Rinjani, Indonesia's second-highest volcano, and marvel at its crater lake. You'll also have the chance to visit indigenous Sasak villages or enjoy a one-on-one cooking lesson in traditional cuisine. Each morning, the lodge offers yoga sessions and at nearby beaches, you can enjoy a surfing lesson.
