A charming corner of southern Java, Malang is known for its striking architecture, overflowing markets and acres of pretty tea and apple plantations. The town itself is an old Dutch colonial settlement and, overlooking the lotus pond right in the heart is the gorgeous Tugu Malang. The very first property in the Tugu group, its original purpose was to house the founder's vast collection of priceless antiques - and all of them are still present today. Often voted as one of the most unique hotels in the world, expect a dreamlike design inspired by aesthetics from across the globe and plenty of history.
Hundreds of antiques adorn every room of the hotel, taking guests on a journey from the colonial Dutch era to Chinese puppetry to traditional Indonesian pieces. Tugu doesn't do anything by halves and that includes their dining: choose Melati for its generational Indonesian recipes, or SaigonSan for an Indochinese flair and rooftop terrace for languid evenings. Filled with art from the owner's private collection, the Ban Lam Bar evokes a European flair, and there's also the beautiful Tugu Tea House for a delightful afternoon tea.
The hotel has 49 rooms and suites, each one designed with flair and style. Some are dedicated to Indonesian art heroes, including the Raden Saleh Suite inspired by the works of the forefather of modern Indonesian painting. All rooms are sumptuous and wonderful with bold wooden and metallic furnishings, handcrafted bathtubs, and opulent drapes. Views range between rooms; some overlook the old town's lily pond and others open onto tropical gardens via private balconies.
Enjoy taking in the history of Malang in the main town square and pick up a few tasty treats along the way. You can also head into the countryside to explore one of the many hiking routes, go white water rafting, or even paraglide above the scenic countryside. Nearby, beautiful spots like Batu, with its charming apple orchards and flower gardens, is also worth a visit, as well as the vibrant Jodipan Village, which is filled with amazing street art.
The hotel is full of character and there's always something of interest to admire. It's also worth asking the staff a few questions too, particularly about the myths and stories of East Javanese culture.
In between adventurous outings, it's worth heading to the spa for a luxuriating treatment. When in Indonesia, hey?
Certain suites are more storied than others so if that plays a big role in your decision-making, be sure to mention it.
