Uga Bay was one of the first resorts to be built in the Pasikudah area and it's also one of the most glamorous. Set just back from the beach and centred around a sprawling infinity pool, everything is present and correct for a lazy-days beach holiday. It's a tad on the larger side, but still manages to maintain a bijou charm, and the staff are fabulous, friendly and will remember your name (and cocktail order) from the day you arrive. Spend your days paddling in the calm waters, reclining on a sun lounger, or doing very little. Bliss.
From $160 person/night
The prime beach real estate. Uga Bay is set upon one of the most beautiful, powdery stretches of sand in the area, with none of the strong currents you'll find in the rest of the country.
Water babies, be sure to get your kicks and head out on a catamaran for snorkelling and scuba sessions over the vibrant reefs.
This is a developing area and noise can sometimes drift across from nearby hotels.
Upmarket styling, beautiful grounds and an enormous swimming pool provide the perfect mix of boutique beach chic but with all the facilities of a resort. The food is always guaranteed to be delicious with a mix of local and Western dishes to choose from, a great celebration of fresh seafood, and an excellent choice of breakfast options. Dine in the main restaurant or opt for something different and set up a table anywhere you like (almost!). There's also a spa, with porthole windows onto the sand, and a beach-side cafe.
There are 44 sparkling rooms at Uga Bay, each facing out towards the Bay of Bengal. 22 of them are on the ground floor, offering easy beach access, whilst the other 22 enjoy spectacular views. All have either a small courtyard or balcony for evening drinks and daytime snoozes. Bay suites have their own private pool, and the double-storey beach villas are perfect for families, with private access to the beach too.
Culture vultures, foodies and water babies will be delighted by the activities on offer at Uga Bay. On land, there are tours of the ancient city of Polonnaruwa and the historical hotspot Batticaloa, as well as adventures to Minneriya National Park, and cooking lessons. On (and in) the water, there are boat trips to spot whales and dolphins, as well as fabulous snorkelling opportunities - or simply enjoy zipping around on a jet ski for a couple of hours of fun!
