In the company of Sapa's mist-infused mountains, Victoria Hotel gazes over nothing but water-logged rice paddies and emerald valleys for miles. Retreat from the clamor of the city to an alpine 'chalet' where steaming cheese fondue warms you on chilly nights and deep wooden baths soak your cares away. The moment the sun pokes over the crest of Fansipan (South East Asia's tallest mountain), the ancient hill villages and remote marketplaces send out a call for adventure. That is, if you can extract yourself from an armchair by the fireplace with your vat of mulled wine made with local spices.
From $60 person/night
Framed by soaring mountain peaks, the scene is deeply tranquil and the staff are always ready to up the relaxation factor.
The hotel just happens to have its own train! If you're travelling from Hanoi, it's worth arriving in style on the Victoria Express.
We're not fibbing when we say, the weather gets pretty frosty and it can drop to zero at night so it's wise to pack accordingly.
Ensconced by well-tended gardens of pruned firs, tall pines and palms, the Victoria Hotel is a calming escape. Inside, the Ta Van restaurant serves a warming menu of both international and local favourites - like the grilled beef in bamboo. The European-style buffet breakfast is a smorgasbord of homemade jams, pastries and cooked dishes. Decorated with large red sofas and warming stone fireplaces, the Ta Fin bar has an impressive list of drinks and desserts (think cream-filled crepes). The spa has a glass-encased pool (so you won't miss out on the view) and offers centuries-old treatments like the Red Dao herbal bath.
Exuding earthy tones, each room is decorated in embroidered hemp textiles and authentic wooden artwork - and comes with a private balcony. The bathrooms are slick with gold-rimmed mirrors and oyster shell tiles in the bath/shower. With a radiator and fireplace to keep you warm, the rooms also have a coffee maker and cosy sitting area. The suites have the most character and come with curtained four-poster beds and minibar. The family studios are furnished with a queen-size and three single beds, a dining table and spacious veranda with views of Mount Fansipan.
Enjoy the height of bucolic living with a picnic in the countryside or get your basket's worth at Sala's colourful weekend stalls. Follow your guide into the hills as you hike mountain trails to reach hidden villages. You can even stay the night in a traditional H'Mong wooden house. Discover a landscape overflowing with beauty on a walk to the Silver Waterfall and lose your breath at Heaven Gate. Back at the hotel, play a round of petanque in the garden or learn to make traditional woven scarves in the lobby.
