The most attractive feature of this single-storey home is instantly apparent: the wide wraparound porch. Overlooking the lavish but well-tended garden and outfitted with plenty of cushioned chairs and tables for breakfasting, it's an appealing place to spend time throughout the day. Inside, the lodge's tall wood-framed windows, high ceilings and handsome but understated furnishings give the place a pleasant folksiness. The pools are exquisite and the tennis court is always open for a match.
Eighteen rooms radiate from the main house in three separate wings. The oldest wing houses eight charming rooms with Oregon pine floors, and en-suite bathrooms with large walk-in showers. The second, more modern wing contains four rooms, each with a private veranda and deep bathtub overlooking a secluded garden. The final wing has four more rooms, these with a fresh, modern feel, clean lines, large four-poster beds and deep, luxurious bathtubs.
Staying at York is luxurious in that most intimate, restorative level – it feels like home! Like all international-grade hotels, it's extremely organised and efficient, with staff to check you in or out around the clock, organise a wake-up call (with coffee or tea), room service or a transfer. If you've booked in en route to some of the country's magnificent parks – Mana Pools, Victoria Falls or Hwange, for example – York is the perfect city sanctuary.
A city of contrasts, intrigue and excitement that’s got plenty to offer on a stopover.
