Made famous by the iconic “Timbuktu: 52 Days” sign in reference to the nomads who began their trans-Saharan camel journeys from the crossroads, it was these exotic caravans that brought – and left – a sense of cosmopolitan allure. Today, it’s a lively trading post and meeting spot, and a great base for those exploring this stretch of the Sahara. Visit during the twice-weekly market, when olives, dates and carpets are piled high amid the dusty streets and traders flock from far and wide, for an unhindered peek into the Berber way of life. Then, head high into the mountains to admire the pretty palm groves and ancient kasbahs scattered between the undulating dunes.

What to do in Zagora

Watched over by ridged mountains, from which Zagora takes its name, the landscape around this desert outpost is ripe for exploring. Head out on your own, wandering through the Draa Valley palmeraie and along mountain trails or spend hours strolling past ancient kasbahs, perusing markets bursting with everything from dates to Berber carpets. For the history buffs, a stop at the Quranic Library is a must; it houses works penned in an ink of walnut, henna, saffron and gold from as early as the 13th century. A little further away, you'll find the sand sea of Erg Chigaga for sunrise camel treks, dune boarding, and some truly epic photography and, for a spa treatment with a difference, try out a 'bath' in a unique sand hammam...
