Welcome to Kenya! You will be met on arrival at Nairobi Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and driven to your hotel.

45mins

Check in to Hemingways Nairobi Hotel

In a world where so many hotels claim "luxury" status, this is one that delivers. The staff are welcoming and keen to oblige (you are even assigned a butler), the suites are grand and the setting is so tranquil and lovely it's hard to imagine you're in the middle of a traffic-congested city. There's not a murmur, apart from the birds and the fountains. And there's something other-worldly about the view of Karen Blixen's green hills from your balcony. The food is top-notch too – carnivores come miles for the steak!

Why you'll love it

Lofty, expansive rooms with vast, bright en-suite bathrooms and large private terraces are characteristic of the hotel’s wonderful sense of space and use of natural light.

Activities at Sanctuary Tambarare

Sat 24 May - Wed 28 May 2025

Nestled amongst fever trees in the shadow of Mount Kenya is Sanctuary Tambarare, a quintessential destination for nature enthusiasts seeking a luxurious and eco-friendly safari experience.

Opened in June 2022, Sanctuary Tambarare is the most exclusive lodge in the award-winning Ol Pejeta Conservancy, with only ten tents and a private villa set deep in 90,000 acres of pristine African plains. Not only will you find the Big Five roaming here, but Ol Pejeta is also the largest black rhino sanctuary in East Africa, as well as home to the two remaining northern white rhinos on earth. A tribute to the region’s conservation efforts, Sanctuary Tambarare echoes this profound respect for nature with thoughtful design that makes a minimal impact on the surrounding flora and fauna, without skimping on wow-factor.

Game drives are a daily delight for guests seeking to explore the Ol Pejeta Conservancy with expert guides. The conservancy is home to more than 130 black rhinos and a host of other animals, from the Big Five to cheetahs, jackals, hippos and hyenas. For an amplified thrill, embark on a game drive after dark, when the plains come alive with nocturnal animals. The experience is unique to Ol Pejeta, as night drives are not possible in most of Kenya's national parks and reserves. Guests may spot the elusive aardvark, white-tailed mongoose, zorilla (striped polecat), bat-eared fox, and perhaps even lions and leopards.

Included in your stay are morning and afternoon game drives on the Ol Pejeta Conservancy and a visit to the chimpanzee sanctuary however there are a variety of other activities also on offer at an additional cost. Examples, include night drives, meeting the northern white rhinos, lion tracking, dog tracking and run with the wild.

Bwindi

Thu 29 May 2025

Flight transfer

This morning, at around 6.00am you will be transferred to the airport for your domestic scheduled flight to Kihihi.

From Kihihi you will set off to your lodge in the Buhoma sector of Bwindi, approximately 1.5 hours.

3hrs 45mins

Check in to Sanctuary Gorilla Forest Camp

Gorilla trekking doesn’t often come hand-in-hand with luxury, but Sanctuary’s Gorilla Forest Camp does a pretty good job of taking care of both. Located deep in the steamy jungle of world UNESCO site Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, the camp is the most established in the region (it opened its doors in 1996), and it’s secluded, atmospheric and utterly magical. It’s also the only accommodation within the forest itself so exclusivity is a guarantee and only seven others will join you on your trek of a lifetime to see the gorillas. Back at camp, fragrant bubble baths, sumptuous three-course feasts and chilled gin and tonics await on your return. Yes, we definitely call that luxury…

Why you'll love it

One of the few lodges inside the forest, gorillas have been known to stroll into the gardens, so keep your eyes peeled!

What you'll do in Bwindi

Fri 30 May 2025

Today you will have an early morning departure to be at the visitor center at 7:30 am for your Gorilla trek introduction. You will then be placed into a group and start your trek to visit the gorillas with guides and porters. These treks can take anywhere from 2 - 3 hours, through the mountains.

Once you have found your gorilla family group you will then have 1 hour to observe them and take pictures, before departing back to the visitor center with your guides. This is a half-day excursion, so you will have time in the afternoon for another area experience or relax and enjoy the beautiful scenery.

It is best to bring good hiking shoes for this as the treks are not on manicured paths. Rain gear is also essential, even in the dry seasons (June - August, Dec - Feb) as sporadic rain showers in the mountains are possible year round.

Gorilla Trekking

Sat 31 May 2025

Enjoy a second day of gorilla trekking today. You will begin again at the park headquarters at 7:30am where you will be assigned your group and then head off to the trailhead.

Mountain gorillas are wild animals and while viewing success rates are over 90%, no experience is the same. Gorilla tracking timings and conditions vary tremendously as the gorillas move continuously through the rain forest. It is good to be prepared and remember the weather can change with very little warning.

Seeing gorillas is likely to be your top priority during your time in camp, and a trek into the mountains will be central to your itinerary. But there is much else to do besides. More moderate guided walks to discover the flora and fauna of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. Interactive community visits, including with the Batwa, the traditional guardians of the forest, and Sanctuary philanthropic projects. Or simply rest up in camp, take a treatment at the spa, swap stories by the campfire, savour the privilege of being in this amazing spot. Maybe the gorillas will come and visit you.
