This morning, transfer to the airport for the domestic flight to Kushiro, where a rental car will be waiting for you. From Kushiro, drive through the wetlands, stopping at the Crane Centre, and go to the Akan National Park.

Head to the far eastern Shiretoko Peninsula today, stopping at Lakes Kussharo and Mashuko as you go on the way to Utoro. If you are short on time Mashuko is the more accessible and beautiful of the two.

A long drive today as you head back west. You will be heading to Sounkyo Gorge, a scenic valley located in the north of Daisetsuzan National Park. The drive does take 4 – 5 hours, so you might want to break your journey somewhere along the way. The route will take you up past Abashiri which makes for an interesting stop.

Take the 3 hour drive to Sapporo, Hokkaido’s largest city.
