Alternative Garden Route

12 night trip
$2.7K - $2.7K / person Pricing info

Your upcoming trip

Just like the original Garden Route, this is a trip worth making by road. First up, enjoy the city lights of Cape Town, then hop in a hire car and wind your way through the glorious Winelands to Robertson. The pretty town is famous for its wine and you’ll taste a variety of different grapes accompanied by sparkly views.

A second meandering drive through the Klein Karoo will take you to Prince Albert. Indulge in leisurely village wanderings or active outdoor activities before you make your way east for a spot of safari, Karoo style. A semi-arid yet utterly beautiful paradise, there are several game reserves in the area for your wildlife fix

Then its onwards to Graaf-Reinet, the fourth-oldest town in South Africa and a culture-lover's dream.

What you can do in Cape Town

Days 1 - 4

Ever heard the phrase, “a world in one country”? Well, Cape Town is a world in one city! Surrounded by craggy mountains, ocean, plenty of lush greenery and rolling countryside, but also a bustling city scene, vivacious cultures and history, you won’t be short of things to do. We recommend starting in the city with a guided tour. Choose your focus from history, food or art (or all three), and discover the spots away from the guidebooks. If a guide isn’t your thing, wander the streets and seek out your own gems. Follow it all up with a connoisseur gin tasting and dinner in an award-winning restaurant and you have Cape Town in a nutshell.

Then there’s the great outdoors. Table Mountain dominates the landscape and with several hiking routes to choose from (guided or un-guided), and the cable car, there’s no excuse for not reaching the top. Other highlights around the city include the Southern Peninsula, home to African penguins, cliff-carved roads, lighthouses and incredible views, and the sun-kissed beaches of the Atlantic Seaboard. And we haven’t even started on the markets, paragliding activities, surfing or shopping yet…

Check in to The Robertson Small Hotel

A hidden gem in the heart of Robertson town (located on South Africa's infamous Route 62), the Robertson Small Hotel is fabulous in every sense of the word. Housed in a beautiful Victorian manor house straight from the pages of a storybook, there are various rooms scattered throughout the gardens, the majority of which overlook aquamarine swimming pools. Inside, the decor wonderfully personal and immaculately thought out - think fynbos-inspired linens, whacky artworks by Cape Townian artist Michael Taylor and stunning signature pieces that will make you want to unpack your suitcase and move right in.

Check in to Dennehof Guest House

Lying on the fertile Kweekvallei farm in the small Karoo town of Prince Albert, Dennehof Guest House (the oldest surviving building in town) is a dreamy escape. Guernsey cows and Angora goats roam the edges of this historic property, which retains its rustic, stately essence through the original Cape Dutch structures of 1835. The town is surrounded by fruit and olive farms and sits at the foot of the dramatic pass across the Swartberg mountains. Experience Karoo-style hospitality, an olive oil estate, delicious cheeses, markets, eateries, museums and rock paintings. Prince Albert is a treat!

What you can do in Prince Albert

Days 6 - 8

Sitting pretty in the heart of the Karoo desert, Prince Albert is serene, quiet and… well, very peaceful! A stay here will have you embracing the countryside charm of small-town South Africa, complete with Saturday morning visits to the local market and evening strolls along main Church Street to admire the Cape Dutch architecture and chin-wag with the neighbours.

If you fancy playing the tourist card, pop into the Fransie Pienaar Museum for a quick dive into the history of the town and life over the years, as well as the Albert Mill. Foodies will enjoy an olive oil or wine tasting on one of the picturesque farms hidden in the countryside, and there’s even a dairy in town, where cows moo happily in the garden and cheeses are piled high, ready for tasting (and purchasing). Also recommended is a drive along the Swartberg Pass, an astonishing feat of labour in a time when machinery was non-existent and every zig-zag and hairpin bend was carved out the rock by hand. Just wait till you get to the top…

1hr 10mins

Check in to Roam Safari Lodge

Roam Private Game Reserve, set on the vast Great Karoo plains between Prince Albert and Beaufort West, is an ecotourism sanctuary of malaria-free scrubland. Thatched Roam Safari Lodge is one of a trio of accommodation options. (You'll know it by the lovingly tended lawn, which is a cool, albeit small, drink for the eyes.) This challenging semi-desert may appear fallow, but its space and silence are addictive – the ideal escape from the noise and mayhem of the outside world. There's a myriad of life, big and small, to explore – and some delicious Karoo-style cooking to enjoy.

3hrs

Check in to Drostdy Hotel

Driving through South Africa's Eastern Cape reveals some little-known gems: quaint towns, geological idiosyncrasies, and padstals (farm stalls), which are oases for padkos (road food). This region, with its striking landscapes and towns spaced at ideal leg-stretching intervals, is heavenly for road trippers. Graaff-Reinet represents the pinnacle of small-town charm, wonderfully preserved as a historic destination. Star of the show here is the Drostdy Hotel, which exudes oodles of character in its Cape Dutch architecture – high white gables, neat thatched roofs and orderly windows. The service is thoroughly modern, though, with fine dining, superb wines and a sumptuous spa.

What you can do in Eastern Cape

Days 11 - 13

South Africa’s Eastern Cape is wild and wonderful, from its undiscovered beaches to the collection of fantastic reserves. Depending on the lodge, you could aim to see members of the Big Five on game drives (Kwandwe’s impressive numbers of elephant and black rhino make it a firm favourite), visit a rhino or big cat sanctuary, or explore the terrain on a walking or horseback safari. Along the way, you could spot giraffe, zebra and antelope and, should the reserve offer night drives, porcupine, aardwolf and aardvark.

Just before Eastern Cape reaches KwaZulu-Natal, find yourself hiking epic mountain trails and searching for dolphins surfing the waves. For something completely different, hop over to the town of Graaff-Reinet. Nestled in the heart of the Karoo, the fantastic local food and breweries are sure to entice you.
