What you'll love

‘Welgelegen’ means ‘beautifully-situated’ and it couldn’t be truer here, with a fabulous location on a peaceful street yet only two minutes from Cape Town’s coolest bars and restaurants.

Insiders tip

The breakfast spread is fit for a king but for a real treat, order it to your private terrace.

Something to think about

The corridors are all exposed-wooden floorboards so if you’re a light sleeper, pick a room upstairs to avoid the through traffic.

The property

Welgelegen comprises of two charming townhouses, set on a quiet street in Gardens, one of Cape Town's oldest and most desirable suburbs. Located between the houses is a tranquil courtyard with sun loungers, a breakfast table and plunge pool to cool off in the summer months. Unwind in the light and cozy sitting room surrounded by quirky books and local artwork, or snooze by the pool. Welgelegen has an intimate feel with a homely and friendly atmosphere that's rather catching.

When it comes to keeping yourself entertained, you really are spoilt for choice in Cape Town. Sun worshippers won't be disappointed by the squeaky clean beaches. If you're an adventure junky, then paraglide off Lion's Head mountain or choose one of the many hikes up Table Mountain. If you're just keen for a few photos, then there is also the cable car to the top. For foodies, take an hour's drive to Franschhoek and the mountain-framed wine lands. Otherwise, a drive down to Cape Point and a stop off at the Penguins never fails to delight.

Positive impact

Welgelegen House is owned by Return Africa which collaborates with the Makuleke people to promote ecotourism and conservation. They develop skills leading to employment in these sectors, establish links with local suppliers, and assist communities in gaining control of conservation land. Their efforts include setting up community-owned lodges, advocating responsible business practices, and documenting project lessons for industry-wide impact. The African Safari Foundation's mission aligns with rural development, emphasising community ownership, skills training, and equitable distribution of tourism benefits, particularly empowering women for sustainable change.

A contribution of $9,20 per stay goes towards the above goals.
