The corridors are all exposed-wooden floorboards so if you’re a light sleeper, pick a room upstairs to avoid the through traffic.
Welgelegen comprises of two charming townhouses, set on a quiet street in Gardens, one of Cape Town's oldest and most desirable suburbs. Located between the houses is a tranquil courtyard with sun loungers, a breakfast table and plunge pool to cool off in the summer months. Unwind in the light and cozy sitting room surrounded by quirky books and local artwork, or snooze by the pool. Welgelegen has an intimate feel with a homely and friendly atmosphere that's rather catching.
Each of the 14 bedrooms have been beautifully decorated with their own attention to detail and individual style. All the rooms boast air-conditioning, bar fridges, satellite television, dressing gowns and complimentary port. There is a floral theme across the hotel, with a pastel colour scheme and locally made artwork. There are 9 superior rooms, 3 deluxe rooms and a family room. They're neat, characterful and perfect for getting a little shut-eye after exploring Cape Town.

When it comes to keeping yourself entertained, you really are spoilt for choice in Cape Town. Sun worshippers won't be disappointed by the squeaky clean beaches. If you're an adventure junky, then paraglide off Lion's Head mountain or choose one of the many hikes up Table Mountain. If you're just keen for a few photos, then there is also the cable car to the top. For foodies, take an hour's drive to Franschhoek and the mountain-framed wine lands. Otherwise, a drive down to Cape Point and a stop off at the Penguins never fails to delight.
Welgelegen House is owned by Return Africa which collaborates with the Makuleke people to promote ecotourism and conservation. They develop skills leading to employment in these sectors, establish links with local suppliers, and assist communities in gaining control of conservation land. Their efforts include setting up community-owned lodges, advocating responsible business practices, and documenting project lessons for industry-wide impact. The African Safari Foundation's mission aligns with rural development, emphasising community ownership, skills training, and equitable distribution of tourism benefits, particularly empowering women for sustainable change.
