Off-the-beaten-track in southern Tanzania

11 night trip
From $8.2K / person Pricing info

Your upcoming trip

Tanzania’s traditional southern circuit will whizz you through Ruaha and Selous, but this itinerary takes things one step further with a stop in Katavi National Park in the west of the country.

If there’s one place that deserves the moniker ‘off the well-trodden path’, it’s Katavi, and the beguiling golden-grass plains are serene, still, and alluringly empty of tourists.

Fly-camping is an absolute must, and the walking safari to and from your tiny camp will reveal herds of buffalo, elephant, and hundreds upon hundreds of antelope.

There’s big cats too, and leopard and lion are most commonly spotted in the shady woodlands.

Complete your adventure with a stop in Ruaha or Selous (or both), two parks that are rich in big game and offer a blockbuster of activities.

What you can do in Dar es Salaam

Days 1 - 3

If history’s your bag, pay a visit to the Museum of Tanzania to learn all about the country’s diverse tribes, or get to know life as it is in Dar at one of the local markets. As a typical pitstop, some prefer to do as little as possible whilst in Dar es Salaam, but there are gorgeous beaches to the north or south, and boat rides to nearby islands if you fancy it.

What you can do in Ruaha

Days 6 - 9

Ruaha’s dramatic terrain is famous for predators and home to good numbers of lion, leopard and wild dog. Large herds of elephant and buffalo are common and there are plenty of antelope around too. The best way to see them all is on a game drive, and 4x4 safaris depart in the early morning and afternoon. You’ll cover vast swathes of land to find the best sightings – and there are few other vehicles to disturb you. In some places, night drives can be done and offer a thrilling chance to spot nocturnal predators and night-time escapades.

Ruaha is one of the best destinations in Tanzania for a walking safari. Guides here are exceptionally well-trained and will lead you on gentle strolls to sniff out smaller flora and fauna, and longer, big-game expeditions. Walking safaris take place in the cooler morning temperatures, although afternoon walks may be possible. And if you’ve got any time left, hot air balloon safaris can be found at a select few lodges – just be prepared for the early morning wake-up!

What you can do in Nyerere National Park

Days 9 - 12

‘The Selous’ or as it’s now known, Nyerere National Park, is the largest reserve in Africa, encompassing terrain that varies from volcanic springs and gaping gorges to open savannah and woodlands. Winding like a shimmering snake through this wild scene is the Rufiji River, making Nyerere Tanzania’s stellar boating safari destination. Look out for boulder-like hippos and lurking crocodiles as you idle by, while the banks attract hordes of elephant, giraffe, buffalo and zebra, followed keenly by Selous lions who are famous for their day-time hunts.

You’ll also have the chance to see the park’s impressive cast of animals on game drives (including night excursions) and walking safaris. The most coveted experience is seeing a pack of African painted dogs scampering across the landscape and, if you plan a visit between May and June, watch pups playing just outside their den.
