For those inclined toward adventure, with Arusha National Park, Mt Meru and Lake Duluti all within easy reach, there is plenty to do, while the birdlife at the lodge can proffer an afternoon of peaceful pottering for those more inclined toward relaxation.

Essentially a giant bowl filled to the brim with Africa’s most iconic wildlife, visiting Ngorongoro is a highlight. Game drives are a given and in most cases, you’ll rise with the sparrows to ensure you’re on the crater floor in time to catch all the action and returning to the lodge in the afternoon. Wildlife-wise, expect to see the Big Five, including good numbers of black rhino (this is the best place in Tanzania to spot the Jurassic creatures) and plenty of plains game - but interestingly no giraffe.

Activities include professionally guided game drives in the morning and evening with your private driver-guide and 4x4 safari vehicle in the Serengeti National Park.

This region is one of the busiest in the park because the vast, open savannah is perfect for viewing cheetah and other big cats, as well as elephant and plains game. Game drives offer camera-snapping sightings of four out of the Big Five (sadly rhino sightings are rare), as well as cheetah, zebra, giraffe and all the smaller game, whether you choose a morning or afternoon drive or an all-day expedition with a picnic.

Think of Zanzibar, think of powdery sand, lapping waves and a sun lounger? Well, yes, Zanzibar has them all by the bucket-load, but there’s plenty beyond the beach too. Water babies can take their pick from just about every ocean activity under the sun, be it snorkelling, kayaking, kite surfing or SUPing. A sundowner aboard a traditional dhow is also a must.

On land, Stone Town is a hub of colour and culture, shopping and spices, and worth a wander (with a guide or without) especially in the evening when the markets come to life. Spice Tours are famous for a reason, and lesser-known but equally as enticing activities include Jozani Forest and Prison Island.
