Atop a ridge in the bay of Vilanculos, a popular holiday destination for South African holiday makers with lush gardens, Casa Rex overlooks the southern-central section of Vilanculo Bay. Stretched out over neat-as-a-pin gardens and shaded by flowering trees, the property is well laid out to allow for areas of privacy and to take advantage of the cooling tropical winds and views. The main beach might not be the best for swimming at low tide, but do adventure to the outer lying archipelagos, where the diving is well worth it before you retreat to the sanctuary of your room.
From $140 person/night
The staff here are incredibly friendly and responsive, it's smiles all round.
The nearby Bazaruto Archipelago is a World Heritage site which is a highlight to explore.
Hire a boat for the day and enjoy a beach picnic on an island.
Large, well kept and manicured gardens surround the hotel grounds and two swimming pools overlooking the beautiful bay of Vilanculos. There is a distinct homely feel to Casa Rex, uncomplicated crafted furnishings and large comfortable chairs in the communal lounge areas. A shaded patio area allows for outside dining facing out towards the gardens, which you can walk down a large amount of steps to reach the beach, but be sure you are prepared for the walk back up!
The 15 different types of rooms retain a neat and uncomplicated decorative air, light cream linen and charming wooden framed shutters. Comfortable poster beds trimmed with mosquito netting, air conditioning and en-suite bathrooms make for a very pleasant stay. Neat little patios allow you to take advantage of the ocean breeze and views over the bay providing you are on the upper floors, but the shade of garden rooms furthest from the main lodge are also affordably comfortable.
Rooms on the second floor have the best views of the ocean. The honeymoon room has it's own spacious patio for not that much extra in price.

Being a boat ride away from the Bazaruto Archipelago you are surrounded by a bounty of tropical island reef waters and marine life expect to spend a lot of time near or in the blue warm waters. Most water sports like scuba diving, snorkeling, fishing and kayaking can be arranged through the lodge. This is some of Mozambique's top areas for scuba diving, so think about taking lessons before you arrive to maximise your experience.
