Elephant's Eye Lodge lies on a 25 square km reserve that borders Zimbabwe's well-known Hwange National Park. The intimate size and exclusivity makes for a very private safari experience, in close proximity to a far busier one. There's plenty to see on the private reserve as it opens onto the national park, but if you want to explore more extensively, you'll have to take the 13km drive into Hwange itself. Elephants are the most notable reason to come here - the park is home to a huge population - but all the other African savannah species are present too, as well as an abundance of birds.
From $360 person/night
It doesn't get much better than watching the elephants' nightly visits to camp for a drink out of the swimming pool.
A bush sleep out at "The Eye" - a raised deck with a comfy bed under a see-through mosquito net - is the optimum spot for stargazing at your own private waterhole.
There is much to see within the reserve but if you really want to get in some top-tier game viewing, making the 13km journey into Hwange is needed.
The main area is made up of three airy, thatched buildings that look out over a central fire pit, some neatly cut grass and floodlit waterhole just beyond. The central double-storey structure is home to the bar downstairs and a small viewing deck upstairs. The simple lounge (with a well-stocked bookshelf) and a smart dining room are off to each side. The swimming pool not only provides a cool spot to watch the goings-on at the waterhole during the day, but serves as a waterhole for dozens of elephants that frequent it each evening for a drink. The Jwapi Spa is close by for those who wish to indulge in some therapeutic luxury.
Eight raised, tented chalets are well spaced along the fringes of the woodland, each with an excellent view of the waterhole. The spacious bedroom has a high thatch roof , which helps keep it cool during the summer, as well as a wood stove fireplace for the cold winter nights. The ensuite bathrooms have deep bathtubs (with great views of their own) and outside showers that make you one with the elephants. Rooms are modern with a minimalistic style but have all the amenities you'll need, and some.

If you stay on the private concession you can take two game drives each day (in the morning and late afternoon). Alternatively, get your guide to pack a picnic lunch and go for a full-day excursion into Hwange National Park. To get to the park you need to drive through the forest between Elephant’s Eye and the main gate, which is usually less productive and takes about half an hour. Otherwise, the game drives are typically rewarding with plenty of big game to be seen. Other activities that are available include visits to a local community and the Dingani Primary School (which the lodge supports) and the Painted Dog Conservation Centre. Expertly guided bush walks are available on the reserve and included in the rate, they just need to be arranged on arrival.
Lovely Lodge where you can watch elephants drinking as you enjoy the camp.
