This Elizabethan-style manor house, built in the 1930s, is the brainchild of kooky Dodo Cunningham-Reid, who with husband Michael bought the land in the 1960s to preserve this special area and its wildlife. Situated in the Great Rift Valley, between lakes Naivasha and Oloidien, Hippo Point is a short distance from Hell's Gate National Park, Lake Nakuru, Elementaita soda lake, and Crater Lake, making this a good base for day trips. Not that the property itself has a shortage of game – guests can expect buffalo, giraffe, zebra and, of course, hippo. It's guaranteed to be a unique safari experience.
From $620 person/night
All food is locally sourced and guests can hang out in the kitchen and help with the preparation of meals. The kitchen staff love sharing recipes and teaching new cooking methods.
Do as much or as little as you want. There are enough activities to keep guests entertained and plenty of opportunities for those wanting to chill to do just that.
Lake Naivasha at the edge of the property is almost completely pink when the multitude of flamingos bathe in the water.
The set-up of the main area is appealingly eccentric. The lounge with fireplace, furnished with antiques, opens on to a veranda that overlooks the beautiful traditional garden. The main dining area is open, but covered, and delectable meals are served in a variety of venues – indoors, in the garden, next to the lake – making every mealtime a new adventure. A short walk from the house, and very secluded, is a gazebo and swimming pool.
The eight rooms (six double, one single, one twin) scattered throughout the house and garden are spacious and luxurious, sleeping 15 people in total. All rooms have en-suite bathrooms with only a bath, except Niko's Tower – a cottage with a single room on the first floor and a bathroom with shower on the ground floor. Wood features prominently, from the floors, windows and exposed beams to the bathtub casings and the intricately carved doors.
At Hippo Point, it's not rare to look out of your window in the morning and see 100 buffalo strolling by. This is a truly unique, never-to-be-repeated safari experience.
Show all activities
"A slow safari" is what the owners call activities here and that sums up their approach perfectly. Stroll in the garden, check out resident animals from the comfort of your room, set off on a bike, take a day trip to the surrounding attractions, enjoy evening game drives or go birdwatching. If that's too fast-paced, unwind with a massage, dip in the pool or find your chi with a yoga session.
Show all wildlife
Species such as hippo, giraffe, buffalo, zebra, warthog, eland and a small population of cheetah, lion and leopard are just a few of the animals you might encounter while exploring the undulating grasslands around Lake Niavasha. Somewhat off the beaten track, experience wildlife present in the region and in the nearby Hell's Gate National Park.
