Wild Expeditions is on a mission to take intrepid travellers into the remotest corners of Africa, encouraging visitors to establish a meaningful connection with nature, sans frills or flourishes. The latest outpost, Karangoma, is located in 30,000 hectares of exclusive terrain near the origin point of the Selinda Spillway in the Okavango Delta. A name that harkens a good future in the Sembukushu language, Karangoma was established in close partnership with local elder, Olatotse Sarefo, and the camp is committed to maintaining genuine and reciprocated engagement with surrounding communities. And of course, its exceptional location means top-notch wildlife sightings from both land and water - and not another soul around to interrupt.
From $620 person/night
Exploring the area on foot and even stopping for a spontaneous dip in the water (safely, of course).
Mokoro and boating safaris are dependent on the water levels, so be mindful of that when deciding on the time of year to visit.
Children must be eight or older to stay at Karangoma and must be over 12 to participate in walking safaris.
Following in the footsteps of previous camps by Wild Expeditions, Karangoma keeps its impact light and its meals flexible. In fact, you'll often dine with your feet in the water, wherever the mood has taken the chef! The central area was curated by interiors gurus, Reflecting Africa, and it does just that, with a stylish take on local patterns and colours. At the heart of camp is the firepit, where you'll sit listening to the chirrups and calls of the Okavango Delta, replaying moments from a day on safari.
Set amongst leadwood and sausage trees on a shady peninsula overlooking the glinting floodplains (in season) and a well-trodden game path, the camp has six tented rooms including a family unit with two en-suite tents. The interiors were inspired by the iconic Hambukushu basketry of the northern Okavango. Each tent features a large bed and lounge area, as well as a bathroom with both indoor and outdoor showers.
The camp is exceptionally well placed for spotting the Okavango Delta's iconic wildlife and offers a whole host of activities. Enjoy day and nighttime drives, thrilling walking safaris, and when water levels allow it, mokoro and boat rides along the glimmering channels. Along the way, look out for herds of elephant, buffalo, scores of antelope, zebra and fluttering birdlife. You can also learn about and get involved with the camp's community engagement projects. And after all that, enjoy your siestas by the plunge pool, eyes peeled for passing wildlife.
