About Kizingo Lodge

Where a curve of the bay hugs the sandy shoreline, Kizingo Lodge nestles, tucked into the dunes and surrounded by beachside scrub. A short boat ride from Shela village and main town Lamu, it’s located right on a spectacularly-deserted 12-kilometre beach and it’s almost absurd not to kick your shoes off and run wild in the sand. Considering the more remote location, food is exceptionally good, and much of the ingredients are sourced from the lodge gardens. Enjoy your morning coffee on your private veranda that has views right over the sand and into the waters, admiring the fishing dhows as they sail past.

What you'll love

Strolling along the beach, flip flops in hand, without seeing another person for miles.

Insiders tip

Manager and owner Louis has been swimming with local pods of wild dolphins for years and you can join him if you're staying between November and April. If you're lucky, you could spend hours playing with them in the ocean!

Something to think about

It's quite a boat ride out to Kzingo and once you're there, you won't want to leave. If you'd like to visit Lamu Old Town, then it's a good idea to overnight there before you head to Kizingo.

The property

Built specifically to not detract from the wonderful laid back surrounds, the main dining, bar and lounging structure is made from locally produced materials of mangrove poles, star palm leaves and coconut palms and makuti flooring. Thanks to a wonderful relationship with local farmers, food is locally sourced and much of the furniture in the lodge hand made. The bar and all inclusive dining area are charming and boast some fantastic views over the sand to the sea and across the bay to mainland Kenya.

The rooms

Eight spacious banda cottages are spread across the dunes alongside the main dining area. Here it is all about true eco principals, with natural ventilation in the form of high pitched roofs, eco toilets (they don't smell) and all waste water is filtered and recycled in the gardens. All the rooms have large, comfy double beds, ensuite bathrooms and drop down bamboo screens for extra privacy. Quaint shaded verandahs and swing beds complete the perfect Robinson Crusoe beach hideaway.

Be as social or secluded as you wish at Kzingo. The large dining area allows you to interact with other guests, family style, or keep to your own company with a more intimate beach dinner. Swimming is a highlight and the channel waters are fantastic at low tide for kids to splash about in. There is also kite surfing and snorkelling, as well as the chance to swim with dolphins in their natural environment. And, from October to June, green turtles will often line the shores to nest. Time it right and you could participate in and learn from The Lamu Marine Conservation Project at the different nesting sites along the beach.
