About Kongoni Camp

Take an adventurer’s saloon plucked from the well-worn tracks of Nanyuki, add top-shelf hospitality and the result is Kongoni Camp. With a vibrant and welcoming atmosphere, Kongoni offers guests stunning mountain views and a unique mixture of a poolside getaway and adventure time. The camp is surrounded by the parks and conservancies that have given Laikipia its reputation as a prime wildlife spot, and it will suit whether you’re looking for a stopover on your Kenyan nature trip or a family holiday spot. The staff are the beating heart of Kongoni, and nothing is ever too much to ask. Tucked away amongst the greenery, Kongoni Camp has a casual charm, complete with a children’s playground and cosy sofas by the fireplace. Enjoy the laid-back ambience, surrounded by bushy cedar trees and birds flitting from branch to branch.

What you'll love

The food! Kongoni has gained a reputation for its variety of dishes from wood-fired pizzas to incredible sushi.

Insiders tip

The mood at the main building is fantastic - why not enjoy an evening meeting other travellers or playing a game of darts?

Something to think about

If you’re looking for pure luxury, Kongoni Camp’s simple and rustic way of life might not be the one for you.

The property

While low-key and rustic in many ways, the central log-cabin-style building is a hearth of good food and a warm atmosphere. Enjoy a variety of dishes at the restaurant or beneath the stars in the thatched dining area. The camp’s tented spa is another top feature, where you can enjoy the likes of a hot stone massage, milk, cream and honey wrap or the intriguing chocolate body polish. Branching out from the main area, you’ll find rondavels dotted around the gardens, connected by winding paths. The solar-heated pool makes for a welcome addition to the picture, perfect for couples and kids alike.

The rooms

Kongoni offers hotel-style rooms as well as five traditional rondavel units, which can easily accommodate a family. The camp’s double or single rooms aren’t massive but they have everything you’ll need, as well as en-suite bathrooms complete with a solar-heated shower. Decorated in earthy tones, along with period furniture and homely touches, the rooms are comfortable and pleasant. You’ll also find a desk, perfect for a work trip or playing a few games. The rooms don’t come with a TV but Kongoni throws in a handy laundry service (vital on any trip, especially after a day of enjoying the nature reserves of Kenya).

Bush Walks

Built beneath the gaze of Mount Kenya, there’s no shortage of activities on a visit to Kongoni. You could choose to recline by the pool, enjoy a spa day or rent bicycles from the lodge for a spot of sightseeing. The Twala Cultural Manyatta provides guided ecotours, a chance to learn about the Maasai culture from the local people or go bird watching with a resident guide. If Kongoni forms part of a greater Kenyan line-up, there are plenty of options for exploration. The Laikipia plateau is renowned for its wide variety of wildlife and landscape. Take your pick from the Aberdare National Park, Ol Pejeta Conservancy, Mount Kenya National Park and plenty of others. You’ll find everything from elephant and black rhino as well as the elusive leopard. This region is the perfect place to enjoy a day of hiking, mountain climbing or game driving.

The greatest conservation success of the region remains with the black rhino, almost half of Kenya's entire population can be found in this area. Laikipia is a real up-and-comer on the African safari circuit, with an impressive diversity of unique species, not to mention home to the famous Big 5. Encounter elephants, big cats (often collared for research purposes), buffalo, Grevy's zebra, numerous antelope and more recently, an increasing wild dog population. Laikipia consist of a mix of high altitude grassland, dotted with rocky outcrops, low lying bush and patches of riverine forest.
