About Makuzi Beach Lodge

Lake Malawi is Africa's third largest lake, at 560km long and 80km wide. An extraordinary geographic phenomenon with azure waters and white sand beaches, it forms the core industrial centre of this landlocked country and a paradisal escape for tourists. Makuzi Beach Lodge sits on the north-west shore, tucked into a secluded cove, surrounded by lush indigenous forest. This intimate setting offers something for the max-out relaxer and the eager adventurer alike. Whether you're keen to snorkel, kayak, hike or stretch out with some beach yoga, there's enough to keep a busybody's interest. Or, if you're more horizontally inclined, the wide beachfront with scattered thatch umbrellas is an ideal spot for some tropical time-out.

Highlights

The warmth of the beautiful Malawian culture, expressed through the down-to-earth and attentive local staff.

The novelty of having a secluded beach practically to yourself.

Hiking to the top of Makuzi Hill for panoramas of the coastline and beyond.

The property

The double-storey main area blends nicely into its treed surrounds, with stone foundations and pillars, and a traditional thatched roof. The structures are simple but well-constructed for the hot tropics, with large windows and wide-swinging doors that lead to expansive patios. All of this makes the most of the broad, sandy cove and lake views. Inside, the lounge is open and airy, furnished with local wooden chairs and sofas.

The rooms

There are 11 self-catering chalets dotted around the property, each with outdoor patios leading onto the surrounding gardens, a short stroll from the crystal-clear lake waters. There are three Superior Chalets - two built directly into the rock - all with full en-suite bathrooms (bathtub and shower), a large open-plan living area, a tea and coffee station and a mini fridge. The five Standard Chalets are smaller, with half bathrooms (no tub). There is a Superior Family Chalet with two separate bedrooms that sleeps a total of six, adjoined by a small lounge area. The Standard Family Chalet has a single room with a double bed and two twins. Both Family Chalets are equipped with en-suite bathrooms and tea and coffee stations.

One more thing...

Visit Malawi during the drier winter months (early May to late Oct); cooler temperatures and less humidity make for a more pleasant outdoor experience.

Snorkelling

The lake provides a myriad of recreational activities within its depths and on its shores. Grab a kayak from the lodge to get into the rocky nooks and crannies of the lake's edge, snorkel or swim just in front, or venture further to Nkhata Bay or Kande Beach for some freshwater diving. Take a hike in the forest or arrange a horse ride. Go fishing or take a stroll through the nearby village to see how the locals live.
