If you're heading off the beaten track to Nong Khiaw, and looking for somewhere to lay your head at the end of a long day adventuring day, Mandala Ou is just the ticket. Set amongst the limestone mountains of the sleepy village, the little hotel is bursting at the seams with rural charm. Simplicity is the watchword, but in the best possible way; it's certainly not a trendy resort packed with stylish furnishings, but it is a spot that feels like the 'real' Laos. You'll enjoy the usual hotel comforts of a restaurant and pool, and there's even a sauna and a small bike hire, but aside from that, Mandala Ou is perfectly, wonderfully unpretentious - and we love it.
From $30 person/night
Everyone loves a pool, but this one is really something, looking out as it does across the river to the karst-studded scenery ahead. And, even better, it's the only infinity pool in the area.
Make the most of having nature at your fingertips (or, more accurately, at your toes) and head out on plenty of hikes in the surrounding hills.
Mandala Ou isn't super-luxe or glitzy, but we think it's all the better for it.
Charming is the best word to sum up Mandala, and the local style and traditional features combined with such spectacular views is a lovely mix. It might be modest, but there's an idyllic pool to cool off in, delicious food options at the restaurant and more outdoorsy excursions than you can shake a stick at. There's even a herbal steam sauna for those looking for a traditional Laotian cleanse.
All rooms are bungalows and there are ten to choose from. It's up to you whether you'd like to look out onto the Nam Ou river, or over the tropical water gardens. If you opt for the gardens, make the most of the attic space and the cooling breeze that circulates. Inside, you'll find an ensuite bathroom, WiFi, and ceiling and standing fans, and outside, there are open-air decks to take in the view and watch the meandering river.
Nature lovers will be in heaven with all that's on offer in the spectacular surroundings. Mix and match exploring the Patok Caves, to hiking up to the mountain viewpoints, to trekking to local waterfalls - and end the day back on your balcony for the incredible sunsets. There are also bikes for hire at the hotel if you want to head slightly further afield. Mandala Ou will help with arrangements for just about any adventure - all you need to pack is your intrepid spirit!
