It's name may be a mouthful, but the Matusadona Luxury Lake Safari Cruiser is anything but cumbersome. This sleek, seven-person yacht runs like a dream, allowing you to experience Lake Kariba's gleaming waters and wildlife-rich shores from the privacy of your own vessel. Lake Kariba, actually a 5,400 square-kilometre dam, is home to plenty of wildlife, from hippo and aquatic birds that live in and beside the water, to elephant, lion and antelope on its banks. Each day the captain moors in a different location for a fresh take on the wilderness, and there's an attendant game-viewing pontoon for adventure-seekers.
From $660 person/night
No, this isn't the Mediterranean, but you'll feel like one of the rich and famous aboard a yacht with a rooftop Jacuzzi. Don't fight it – enjoy each coral sunset on the upper deck, champagne in hand.
Exploring a new location each day, from the lake's several islands or the river tributaries to the Matusadona National Park. Approaching bathing elephants or a pod of hippos on the safari pontoon is exhilarating, as is angling for bream or the much-coveted tigerfish.
The tranquillity and intimate atmosphere are unparalleled, and its dedicated four-person crew is polished, attentive and very discreet. The vessel is perfect for relaxing family holidays or honeymoon getaways.
The large, open-plan upper deck is where you'll find the dining room, bar, living room and – cherry on the top – the outdoor Jacuzzi. Much of the day is spent here, wildlife viewing, eating delicious home-cooked meals, sipping something cold or catching a tan. The middle deck is home to the galley, an outdoor breakfast area, the lounge and entertainment room, a small library and an indoor bar and dining room for extremely hot or cooler days.
Cabins are located on the lower deck, eye-level with the water-line. There are three two-person cabins and a single cabin, sleeping a comfortable seven in total. Rooms are reasonably spacious with queen-sized beds; they have lovely hardwood finishes and each has its own en-suite bathroom with a shower. The Egyptian linens and authentic woven furniture give you a sense of easy luxury.
This is not an adrenalin-filled safari, but if what you're after is a bit of rest and respite, this novel take on a mobile safari can't be beaten. You'll enjoy a fabulous wilderness experience while floating in the lap of luxury.
Cruising the banks of Lake Kariba is an ideal way to spot wildlife coming to drink, and watch elephants bathing and playing in the shallows during the heat of the day. The game-viewing pontoon is always on call for an up-close wildlife encounter or a fishing excursion. Canoe expeditions as well as game walks in select areas are also on the activity menu. More passive but equally pleasing pursuits include a sunrise coffee or sundowners on the upper deck.
