Just north of Xai-Xai in southern Mozambique, Naara Eco-Lodge and Spa has the best of two worlds – its sheltered setting on the forested banks of beautiful and secluded Lake Nhambavale, and its proximity to some of the most rarely used tropical beaches on the Indian Ocean. This is the perfect spot to escape the crowds, or to get your fix of oceanside adventures. Providing both exceptionally comfortable accommodation and really good cuisine, this small retreat's remote location (it's some distance from the nearest village) will leave you feeling like Robinson Crusoe, with a sophisticated twist.
From $70 person/night
The two-tiered infinity pool has spectacular views of the lake, and the plush sunloungers are the perfect place to unwind with a book and enjoy the sunshine. Kids really enjoy the pool.
Whether you're a beginner or a pro, Chidenguele Beach (just two kilometres away) is a top spot for a kite-surfing. The waters are clear, so don goggles, flippers and a snorkel and explore the underwater world.
There are more than 25 kilometres of lake shoreline to explore, so use one of the lodge's kayaks for a morning or evening paddle.
Between the wooden jetty, the pool deck and the shaded lapa, the outdoor common areas are full of charm and offer plenty of quiet places with comfortable recliners on which to relax and enjoy the view. Inside is a bar area with a gorgeous wooden countertop, and an adjoining lounge with comfortable seating. The separate dining room has sliding glass doors to make the most of the lake views. Hammocks are strung about the garden, and there's a first-rate spa.
Being eco-friendly doesn't mean you're roughing it. Naara's 20 luxurious tented chalets are strategically spread across the hillside to allow for maximum privacy. Large, folding glass doors lead from the shaded veranda into your tent, so you'll have uninterrupted views of the lake. There's a centrally placed four-poster bed draped with mosquito nets, full-length curtains at the doors and beautiful Balinese furniture. The en-suite bathroom opens on to a small private garden with an outside shower. There's wi-fi too.
Surrounded by nature, Naara's peaceful setting is the ideal retreat from the busyness of life. We loved the fresh seafood and ice-cold beer. All-round heavenly.

The proximity to the lake, the forest and the sea means there are activities for everyone. Fish, kayak and windsurf on the lake or in the ocean. Hike in the forest (the full-moon walk offers excellent stargazing and sightings of nocturnal wildlife), explore the beach on foot or horseback, snorkel the shallow reefs, or head to sea to swim with dolphins or whale-watch. In camp, the pool is irresistible, and there's a playground for children and a spa for you.
