Zona Braza lodge occupies a prime location in the Xai-Xai region on Mozambique's southern coast. This mid-range lodge offers comfortable accommodation with good self-catering facilities, perfect for friends and families. It's about a 200-kilometre drive north of Maputo (the capital), but you don't need a 4x4 to get there. Long stretches of deserted white sand beaches are protected by a shallow reef, forming some of the most awesome natural tidal pools we've seen. Endless swimming and snorkelling opportunities, the marine life is sensational (expect dolphins, turtles and humpback whales between May and September), and there's a freshwater lake for birders.
From $40 person/night
Stroll one kilometre down the road to the tiny bakery that sells deliciously fresh bread every day.
There are so many species of fish to see or catch, so take a mask or a rod, whichever takes your fancy.
Escape the crowds and connect with the bliss as you explore long stretches of beach and shallow rock pools in peace.
From the beach, steps lead to a large wooden deck with a sparkling pool surrounded by umbrella-shaded deck chairs. More stairs lead to a second pool deck, with bright picnic tables and an adjoining restaurant that serves simple yet tasty fare, like fish 'n chips and burgers. The real vibe is down at the beach bar, a thatched-roof platform just steps from the sand, where you can enjoy a game of pool or darts and a couple of cold ones.
Various concrete and reed houses set in the dunes provide comfortable accommodation for groups ranging from couples to eight people. The casas and double-storey villas each have one bedroom with an en-suite bathroom, a shared bathroom for the remaining rooms, and an outdoor shower. Some units offer en-suite bathrooms for all bedrooms. All have fully equipped kitchens with fridges and gas stoves, and are cleaned daily. Expect superb sea views, especially from the front porch, where there's a built-in barbecue.
This lodge is 10 times better than its website suggests. Its comforts are undeniable, but they don't encroach on the privacy of your self-catering holiday.
This is the perfect beach for chilling and bathing in the calm rock pools, but the activities available are exciting, and incredibly tempting. Bring your snorkelling and fishing gear (or hire it) to take advantage of the excellent conditions for both. Book a canoe for a day, be courageous and try parasailing, kite-surfing or quad-biking in the area nearby. Stroll the sands, look for some of the 100+ bird species, or surf the break right in front of the lodge.
