A hundred and fifty kilometres due north of Nairobi, surrounded by Kenya's magnificent Laikipia plateau, lies Segera Retreat. To its east rises Mount Kenya; to the west, the renowned Great Rift Valley. This region, with its landscape alive with woodlands, grasslands and gorgeous riverbeds, is fast making a name for itself as the place for bespoke, authentically African safaris. Segera has teamed up with a local designer and travel specialist to create the riverside Nay Palad Bird Nest, which gives guests an opportunity to sleep beneath the stars, albeit in supreme luxury – in an avant-garde but uber-comfortable bird's nest.
From $1,670 person/night
Getting a 360-degree bird's-eye view of the world, with nothing but nature in your frame. Try it for yourself – you'll be hooked by the great accommodation (it really highlights how architecture should fit into the wilderness), and the endless views.
Gourmet picnics unlike any you've ever experienced for dinner and breakfast (the latter with a floor show of elephants, giraffe and other wildlife at the river).
Sleeping beneath the unpolluted night sky in the comfort of a warm bed shrouded by mosquito netting. It's a great experience, perfect for a completely private one-night addition to your stay at the retreat.
The cylindrical nest was built using sustainably sourced raw materials, mainly wood and branches woven together by community workers. The structure has three levels – a fully equipped bathroom at ground level, a bedroom above it, and a top-storey multi-purpose deck surrounded by a 'nest' – a thick tangle of woven tree branches. From the summit, the 360-degree views of the plains and the nearby river are phenomenal. Enjoy your evening and morning picnic here, lounging on giant egg-shaped cushions.
Stairs on the structure's outer wall lead to the bedroom, with its wood-slatted glass-less windows. Inside, the large bed has locally woven blankets, embroidered pillows, and generous mosquito netting. From the rug on the floor, a woven eagle meets your gaze. But the real bird's-eye view is from the top deck, which can accommodate a second bed if you wish to sleep beneath the stars, or bring the kids. The bathroom has hot showers and a flush loo.
An unforgettable sleep-out experience in the heart of the wilderness. We loved the wildness of the place, and the contrasting luxury of the interior.
Game drives and walks are conducted from Segera Retreat, so your guide will drop you off at the nest just as the sun nears the horizon. Head to the top deck for your sumptuous picnic dinner, complete with a dozen lanterns and champagne. Your gourmet breakfast picnic will be delivered to you just after sunrise. Then it's back to Segera to search for the wild creatures, including rare species like Grevy's zebra, wild dogs, black rhino and reticulated giraffe.
Show all wildlife
The greatest conservation success of the region remains with the black rhino, almost half of Kenya's entire population can be found in this area. Laikipia is a real up-and-comer on the African safari circuit, with an impressive diversity of unique species, not to mention home to the famous Big 5. Encounter elephants, big cats (often collared for research purposes), buffalo, Grevy's zebra, numerous antelope and more recently, an increasing wild dog population. Laikipia consist of a mix of high altitude grassland, dotted with rocky outcrops, low lying bush and patches of riverine forest.
