Rapelling down waterfalls, trekking over lava fields and horseback rides through the forest; we could only be talking about Costa Rica's out-and-out adventure capital, Arenal Volcano. A ravishing wilderness all on its own, Nayara Gardens brims with greenery and blossoming vines, where capuchin monkeys and hummingbirds (and 500 other species!) amaze. Volcanic vistas are enjoyed from every corner of the grounds, including the private casitas, which quickly feel like home. Everything about the resort embodies Costa Rica's Pura Vida spirit and a passion for eco-conscious living - take a walk above the thousands of native trees Nayara Gardens has planted to see what it's all about.
From $210 person/night
You'll want to spend a good deal of time wandering through the stunning gardens, soaking in one of the mineral springs and listening to the cacophony of birdsong. There are plenty of dining choices to munch through (most ingredients are locally-grown and organic) from Latin American favourites on the terrace as local music fills the air, to Asia-Luna for signature sushi and 'Nayara Rolls'. The multi-pavilion spa offers treatments using coffee, volcanic mud and chocolate clay - a great combo with a dip and a drink at the swim-up bar, or a wine-pairing evening at Nostalgia.
The freestanding casitas are little oases amongst the rainforest and offer the utmost privacy in the beautiful setting. Each is decorated with dark wood furniture and funky prints, and dominated by a large, curtained bed. The casitas all open onto a terrace with scenic views of the jungle or enthralling Arenal Volcano, which you can enjoy from a hammock or alfresco hot tub. Some of the larger villas also feature a plunge pool and wrap-around veranda. The bathrooms are spacious with an indoor and a garden shower.
Remember what we said about Arenal and adventure? Well, buckle up, because you can explore this epic landscape on hikes below the famous volcano or horseback rides beside turquoise waterfalls, kayaking on Arenal Lake or ziplining through the rainforest canopies - eyes peeled for toucans, trogons and, if you're lucky, the shy quetzal. And Nayara Gardens' eagle-eyed, naturalist guides will be there every step of the way. For something different, learn about how coffee goes from bean to brew or discover the crafting traditions of the Maleko people.
