Built in the early 20th Century, Nimmu House is a testament to the Northern Indian and Ladakhi architecture of days gone by. Once left to fall into a state of disrepair, the boutique property was lovingly refurbished by a team of designers, historians and architects, all tasked with bringing it back to its former glory. And boy did they achieve their aim. Today, there are five charming rooms within the main building and seven cosy tents scattered through the fragrant orchards, adorned in local artworks and Kasmiri latticed wood, and a lesson in chic, subtle elegance.
From $80 person/night
The freshly-cooked and utterly delicious fare, with ingredients gathered from the kitchen garden, organic orchards and local farm.
Find your zen with twice daily yoga and meditation sessions, the perfect way to destress.
Nimmu House is 45 minutes from Leh so think more spiritual retreat then buzzing city hub.
This cute-as-a-button eco-hotel is set over three floors and the careful renovation made every effort to respect the building's history. The interiors were all handled by French designer Emeline Leveille-Nizerolle who ensured the use of local materials and textiles throughout, creating a space of pure style. Outside, the apricot, walnut and apple orchards are utterly glorious and on a fine day, you'll enjoy eating amid the fruits and surrounded by the Himalayan panorama.
For your stay, choose between one of the cosy indoor heritage rooms or a fabulous Rajasthani tent in the garden. The four bedrooms in the main building all feature twin or king size beds, private ensuite bathrooms and hot water warmed by a solar panel. The seven tents are sprinkled through the nearby orchard and have three separate compartments: a small entrance room, either for relaxing or for the kids if required, a super-spacious bedroom, and private bathroom with the best showers in Ladakh.
There's never any shortage of things to do in Ladakh and a stay at Nimmu House proves no different. Take a tour through the village of Nimmu with a local guide (make sure to enjoy namkeen chai - a traditional butter tea), visit a local potter and make your own works of art, trek along the winding Himalayan paths, attack the steep inclines on a mountain bike, visit monasteries, raft the Indus river or take yoga and meditation classes. We might need to meditate just writing that list!
