About The Grand Dragon Ladakh

One of the only luxury hotels in the north Indian city of Leh, The Grand Dragon offers comfort and high-altitude style at a staggering 3500 metres above sea level! Adorned with beautiful antiques and furnished with luxurious textiles, teak floors and carved wooden balconies, the whole property is a testament to Ledakhi heritage and design. And then there's the views. The kind that have to be seen to be believed, every bedroom looks out over the snow-hatted mountainscapes the region is famed for, making waking up an epic experience. If you're looking for a warm, relaxing spot to recuperate after hiking those very surrounds, this is the place for you...

What you'll love

The interiors, created and influenced entirely by local artisans, and the artworks by Gulam Mustafa, the first modern artist of Ladakh.

Insiders tip

If you're feeling the altitude, ask for hot bowl of garlic soup. Rumour has it that it's ideal for fending off sickness.

Something to think about

If you're seeking the famous snow leopards, winter is the best time to travel and whilst the hotel is open year round, there can be issues with frozen pipes in the coldest months - but really it's the same everywhere.

The property

The Golden Dragon might be a large property, but it's one that puts hospitality first. Requests are always greeted with a friendly smile and staff are happy to arrange just about any local excursions. As you arrive, you'll have your oxygen levels checked to make sure you're managing the altitude - and you can return at any time for a test. Then, O2 done and dusted, head straight to the restaurant for local delicacies like momos and timstuk, followed by afternoon in the spa or sauna (or the gym if you feel so inclined).

The rooms

With 50 rooms and suites, you won't be short of choice and there's everything from deluxe rooms to luxury suites. All rooms have heating (very welcome), air-conditioning (maybe not so much!), LED satellite TVs, ensuite bathrooms and incredible views of the mountainous vistas. Interiors are vivid, colourful and the beautiful textiles reflect the ever-changing colours of the peaks outside.

Activities

Most people stay here for the opportunity to track snow leopard on foot and seeing these majestic creatures in the wild is magical in every sense. Other than that, the hotel is well-placed to advise on and help book local activities, from visiting local heritage sites and monasteries (Hemis, Thiksey and Alchi are probably the most well-known), to mountain biking and camel treks. Otherwise, head out for a gentle amble and let the scenery do the talking.
