Tucked beneath tall, yellow-barked acacia trees in the heart of Ol Pejeta’s wilderness area are the Safari Cottages, established in 2012 by a family whose combined experience in the wildlife industry exceeds 65 years. So you're in capable hands. Enjoy the silence, the space, the uninterrupted views, your personal chef (or you can self-cater), great accommodation and plenty of game. Here, in the southern sector of the conservancy, there are animals at every turn, from elephant (which often file past the cottages), lion, leopard and cheetah to black rhino, birds galore and other creatures great and small.
From $460 person/night
Being part of the Ol Pejeta family. The laid-back yet tailored days and the incredibly warm hospitality will make you feel like you have lived here all your life.
Be sure to take a bush walk with Andy Webb during your stay. A celebrated Southern African guide who's knowledge of Africa knows no bounds, you're guaranteed to come away with more knowledge than you ever thought possible.
Your stay (including chef and guide) is totally exclusive so if you love to socialise with other guests on safari, you may find yourself short of people to chatter with.
The cottages are completely independent, but come with a full complement of staff including an on-site manager, a private chef, housekeeper and waiter. They're on hand to make your stay as comfortable and enjoyable as possible, from preparing meals and picnics to lighting the fires each evening to welcome you home from a late game drive. Night and day, guards patrol the electric fence that surrounds the property.
There are just three cottages, each sleeping four people in two bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms. There's a central open-plan lounge and dining area, and a large fireplace for cosy evenings. Each unit has a fully equipped external kitchen and comes with its own chef and waiter, should you need their services. All the rooms open on to a veranda that stretches the length of the cottage and is perfect for resting and gazing at the river and the wilderness.
Ol Pejeta Conservancy covers 36,400 hectares of bush straddling the equator between Mount Kenya and the Aberdare mountains. This is East Africa’s largest black rhino sanctuary, and you'll also see elephant, cheetah, lion, leopard and some rarer northern species – Grevy’s zebra, Jackson's hartebeest, Beisa oryx and reticulated giraffe. Visit the rescued chimps at Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary and the Endangered Species Boma, home to the world's last remaining northern white rhino. Or spend a morning at the charming local school.
Show all wildlife
The greatest conservation success of the region remains with the black rhino, almost half of Kenya's entire population can be found in this area. Laikipia is a real up-and-comer on the African safari circuit, with an impressive diversity of unique species, not to mention home to the famous Big 5. Encounter elephants, big cats (often collared for research purposes), buffalo, Grevy's zebra, numerous antelope and more recently, an increasing wild dog population. Laikipia consist of a mix of high altitude grassland, dotted with rocky outcrops, low lying bush and patches of riverine forest.
