Unfortunately this lodge is no longer operating and has been replaced by Onguma Camp Kala
Looking for a really private wilderness adventure in northern Namibia? Onguma Tree Tops may be just the ticket. Raised on stilts among the trees that give it its name, the camp has a real bush atmosphere. It's the perfect getaway for a group of friends or family (there are just four tents). Onguma Tree Tops lies in the private Onguma Reserve on the eastern edge of Etosha National Park, so there's lots to explore and see. The service is attentive without being uncomfortably looming and the overall experience is convivial and – well, wild!
From $450 person/night
Lying in bed watching the animals come to the waterhole to drink – a real luxury.
Exploring the wide-open landscape on game drives in Etosha National Park (includes drinks).
Guided walks on the Onguma Reserve. Look out for the smaller creatures and those birds you've been longing to tick off your list.
Connected to the rooms by raised wooden walkways, the communal area is where guests gather to eat at a large table beside the open-plan kitchen – chatting to the chef as he works is encouraged. His food is excellent (don't miss the banana and rum mousse!). The dining room also overlooks the waterhole, so keep your camera to hand. After eating, relax in the lounge or beside the small fire pit to listen to the night hum and watch the animals drinking.
The four canvas-and-thatch rooms are built on stilts – leave one side open at night if you'd like to feel a closer connection to nature and hear the animals moving below, or simply roll it down. Inside, the large bed is mosquito-netted, the decor is neutral, with crisp white linen and touches of green, and the bathroom forms part of the bedroom, with a closed-off lavatory. On the deck, a screened open-air shower allows you to watch the waterhole while washing.
We loved the open-fronted rooms perched high on stilts overlooking the waterhole. Watching animals or the starry skies from our outdoor shower was a real treat. A word of advice – your nights may be disturbed by frogs; use the earplugs provided.
From Onguma Tree Top Camp, you can take guided game drives into Etosha National Park (drinks included), as well as day-time and sundowner drives and guided walks within Onguma Reserve itself. Settle back in the lounge (there is free wi-fi throughout the property) or on the deck, or head off for a post-lunch snooze. The choice is yours.
