About Sailaway Dhow Safaris

Journey through the famed Bazaruto Archipelago National Park in southern Mozambique on a dhow boat - one of the oldest forms of marine travel in Africa. For three days, you'll glide between the palm-fringed islands of Benguerra, Bazaruto and Santa Carolina, exploring the white-sand beaches and sleeping under the stars. A true highlight of the trip is a stop-off at the magnificent Two Mile Reef for a touch of snorkelling and diving, and the chance to see a rare dugong. Slow and laid-back, the journey is rustic, island living at its very best, but a truly fantastic way to experience this stunning area of the Indian Ocean.

Highlights

Snorkel on Two Mile Reef and spot turtles, rays, and, if you're really lucky, a rare dugong.

Stop off at footprint-free beaches and eat fresher-than-fresh seafood, cooked on the boat itself.

Experience the stunning Mozambican islands of the Indian Ocean at the pace of the early explorers in Africa - by rustic dhow.

The property

Sailaways' rustic beach camps are exactly that - rustic, but perfectly comfortable. Seafood is the order of the day, and your captain and deckhands will rustle up fresh fish and salads either on board the boat, or over a fire on the beach. All safaris include snorkelling gear (masks, boots, fins etc), and if you'd like to try a spot of scuba diving, professional dive operators can be arranged to meet you at the various destinations. And just in case the weather is too perfect and there's not a breath of wind, an auxiliary motor ensures that you're still able to reach your next castaway destination.

The rooms

All sleeping tents have camping mattresses, pillows, sleeping bags and solar lights. Hot showers and toilet facilities are also available, so there's no need to rough it too much, but this is not luxurious by any means - and that's what makes it so brilliant.

One more thing...

Five-star luxury is all very well, but it's this sort of trip, sleeping under the stars in the middle of one of the most beautiful places on earth, that you'll remember forever.

If you are lucky, dugongs are sometimes seen in the channel between Bazaruto and Benguerra Island, so keep an eye out for these rare ocean wonders. There's plenty of snorkelling to be done, particularly at the magnificent Two Mile Reef or around the Benguerra Island trails and lakes. There's a fair chance that you'll see turtles and rays and it's not uncommon to have an entire pod of dolphins swim alongside the boat whilst you sail. Magic.
